About The Mackinac Bridge is one of the largest suspension bridges in the world. It is over 5 kilometers long. This shot was taken on a slightly drizzly day in early Sept./07. The bridge spans the Straits of Mackinac, near the northern-most part of Lake Michigan.

Thanks again Biljana.
A little mix of both I suppose :) It really does a nice job of adding to the atmosphere of the image. I think I might shoot everything in fog from now on :)

wow very appealing bridge, and a great job capturing it, It has many of the qualities of the golden gate..

Andre Denis   {K:56377} 9/10/2007
Hi Marcus,
They claim it is the nicest looking bridge in the States. At least that's what the Michigan Tourist Brochure says. We googled it when we got home to find out a bit more about it. It really does rival the Golden Gate for size. Apparently there was a plan in the works to build this one for over 50 years before they got the okay to go ahead with it. There wasn't enough need for it at first. Here is another view that shows even more likeness to the Golden Gate .

Now, of course my Mac is mighty! ;-)

Jokes aside, it's a very interesting image as the weight carrying beams and the wire ropes simply disappear into the clouds. Some more sharpness on the foreground could enhance the felt distance to the bridge and so also its huge size. But I guess that the low light didn't allow a much faster shutter and/or narrower aperture.

Hi Nick,
Yes, I think I took this one on the Auto Landscape setting and Auto focus out in the distance somewhere. I made a mistake earlier when I said that this camera will only go to F9. If you use the "Landscape" setting it is possible to have a narrower aperture. Allthough there was a lot of fog, it was still quite bright out due to the sun breaking through. So, it was possible for me to shoot some different options. But, you know what it's like when you are travelling....rush rush rush, no time to think :)

Yes, I know exactly what you're talking about Andre. That's why I sometimes vote for travelling the good old way - on feet! ;-) (In case it is still too fast, just carry some heavy weight! ;-))

Indeed a nice thing to have a cooperating sun in such scenes. What would happen if the light was not as strong? Would the camera set some slower shutter speed?

But very interesting your camera. That means that though manually we can adjust down to F9 there are still auto-settings that go further(?). Now you got me thinking about some possible "hack" to override that and get that F11 in manual settings. (A programmer and his hacking dreams! ;-))

Thanks a lot for the info,

Nick

Andre Denis   {K:56377} 9/25/2007
Hi Nick,
I might have miss led you on the way that the auto setting on this camera works. I will have to go back to the manual for a better explanation myself. But yes on the first part. If the light is lower, the shutter speed will automatically go slower. (sometimes a problem) But, I can set a shutter speed and the camera automatically picks the Fstop. Or vice versa. If I set the Fstop, the shutter speed will be picked by the camera.
If the exposure is not possible, the offending setting shows up in red. Then I might have to change the change ISO number to get the right exposure.

Thanks a lot for the nice explanation, Andre! Well, that's the way mine does it too when in auto shutter or auto aperture mode - including the offending red flashing lights to tell me that I shouldn't do that! ;-) Oh well, in all manual mode no warnings ever appear. (We don't offend "serious photographers", do we? ;-))
