About OK...stay with me, this is Bill, who is Robbo's (the Bass-Man) Dad, and Megan's (the Hat Hag) future father-in-Law.
He agreed to let me take some shots of him, thanks Bill!!

I like that he is not smiling in this one, normally he is very smiley and cheeky, so this is his serious side, captured for a second in time.

B+W conversion, masking to bring him 'out' more, cloning out og two big black poles from background, grain added.

superb portrait and great light and contrast.

Hey there Rick, thanks so much for your look and kind comment,
cheers, Beks

Very good... I'd probably get rid of the leftmost part of the photo (that black ribbon or whatever it is just looks untidy).

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/7/2007
Hey there Danny, thanks for taking the time to look and for your honest critique.
I left the black marks in on the left side to try to balance out the darkness of Bill's coat. I also didn't want the image to look too tidy...LOL!
Different strokes for different folks hey?!!
cheers....B

kkkkk kkkkk   {K:-21} 9/7/2007
Sure thing, we look at things differently. I think that Bill's face and eyes are already in balance no coat can upset. ;-) Cheers!

Liz Wallis   {K:25505} 9/7/2007
Hmmmm, yep, I think this looks pretty smashing Bek. The eyes are drawn in completely to his face, and the light and tones are great. I have only one tiny tiny little pick, and it is very tiny...and that is that one eye is nice and bright, and the other seems a little dull. ie: the white of the eye is not as noticeable as the other..Sorry I have this things about eyes lately. probably more noticeable because it is in b/w?. Which takes me to the great conversion that you have made. A wonderful addition to your PF. I like the more serious look :)
Cheers
Liz.

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/7/2007
Hiya Liz. Thanks for the thumb and a half up! LOL
I am trying to take some 'serious' shots at the moment...
Bill's eyes were quite different, I had to dodge the dark one to lift it a bit. Am attaching the orig below so you can see...the orig. LOL
.....B

orig!!

Liz Wallis   {K:25505} 9/7/2007
excellent, now I get to see what you did :) I can see where you are coming from though. BTW..very good job on clonin out those poles!!
:)

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/7/2007
Nah, there are some spots I am not happy with, it was HARD Liz, don't make me do it again...pleeeease!
Bill has a very ruddy complexion, and when I did the B+W conversion, he seemed to blend into the background, so I had to mask him (see all those wispy hairs? I'm not sure they are all his!) to bring him forward a bit, adjust both sets of levels until I thought it balanced ok without him looking too much like I had stuck him on...ah the stress!

....B

Liz Wallis   {K:25505} 9/7/2007
Yep, well welcome to my world :) :) Some days I walk away from this computer feeling like a total failure...then I go drink lots, sleep it off, come back the next day, and things don't seem so bad....not really, I just walk away, and come back later after thinking about it for a while.

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/7/2007
LOL...most of us wouldn't have it any other way though eh?

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/7/2007
I have just pulled up the original in PS again, zoomed right in on Bill's eye...he has a bit of an eye thingy there in the inside corner of the 'dark eye'.
I am never sure when I am editing something for someone else whether or not to 'fix' these type of things, you know, crooked teeth, hairy moles, that third eye etc.
But anyhoo.....

Liz Wallis   {K:25505} 9/7/2007
If it's something for me, then I fix it, if it is for someone else, I keep it as real as possible, unless they ask for it..most times though, small anomolies like the eye thing, I will do something to make it less obvious, no total removal just diminished.

I know you will keep workin it until you are happy, though, so I am going to shut up now...

Nice work Bek....excellent DOF and I had to really look hard for the clone

Dave Arnold   {K:55603} 9/7/2007
Nice portrait shot of an interesting face... Now that ya got that big, bad piece of equipment camera... you should be able to switch over to monochrome for shots like this. Just think of all the things you can now do.... and you're doing them, granted. awww, forget it, I'm just blabbering.

:)

Gary Hill   {K:31749} 9/7/2007
This is a natural, sympathetic portrait, Becca. Lighting is really good. He looks to me like sort of an 'average' bloke who probably knows more than he lets on, judging by his confident eye contact. With the lockers in the background I'm thinking swimming or footie coach. I'm a little intrigued as to why you added grain. He looks like he's got enough lines and texture (i.e. years of experience) in that face to grace any b&w portrait.
Regards, Gary

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/11/2007
Larry, there are some spots where I cloned that could have been waaaaay better, but I suppose to the un-initiated they may not even notice it had been done...LOl.
Am still looking for new faces to exploit...er..pose for me, haven't had any luck pulling people off the street, could it be the balaclava and trench coat? May have to change my attire next time....

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/11/2007
Blab away Cap'n......:P

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/11/2007
Hey there Gary, thanks so much for your fantastic comment.
You are spot on too, Bill knows lots, says little....but when he gets going....boy, what an insight, or a laugh,or a ....well, let's just say he is great fun.
It was really good to use him as a model to practice on, he was very comfortable and took direction well.
You are the only one to pick up on the personal link of the lockers, and you were close....he is a farmer but also works part-time at the local Catholic College as the grounds keeper and maintenance man, looking after anything and everything that needs to be done. He is very handy.
I think the lockers would have been 'acquired' from there when they were doing an upgrade. I would love them for myself actually....

The grain I added just because. I like grain......LOL
But you are right, it was probably unnecessary, as Bill has such an interesting face to begin with.
Once again, thanks a bunch for your great comment, much appreciated.
cheers, Beks

You gotta quit inviting them to your bathroom..where's Onie?

rebecca claassen   {K:16416} 9/11/2007
She has had some dramas with the new house, it seems the company that built it had a little trouble finding decent tradesman, plus she is organising having the decking built...plus...she has carpel tunnel syndrome in both of her hands, and is going into hospital to have her left hand operated on on the 21st of this month.

The strength in her hands is not very good at the moment, and rapidly decreasing, so she is finding it hard to hold the camera, or operate it even with the tripod.

This is very frustrating for her, as she is dying to get the *Canon* out to learn it.
She wants to get the garden established so that the birds come etc. She has been eying off two eagles that hang around the new house, but the shaky hands aren't playing the game!! LOL

So, in short....or not...LOL, she has been very busy. After her op and some recuperation time she will be back at UF.
