About Debbie and I hired a helicopter to get these shots of the Columbia Ice fields In Jasper Nat Park. We timed it for the sunrise by sleeping in the parking lot in order to be ready for the early lift off, hoping for a sky with broken clouds to maximize the lighting drama. We were lucky as the weather was perfect. The flight was the price of a new camera, but worth it in my mind as we got to see sights that you would never see otherwise....it was just stunning....I brought both of my D80 camera bodies, one with the 18-200mm lens and the other one with the 12-24mm lens. The flight was bumpy with lots of vibration and many of my shots were blurred or had the rotor blades in the shots. But by bracketing all my shots i usually got one out of three if i was lucky. The flight was 55 minutes in length and to short in my mind. I wish were were rich so that we could have been up there all day!
On the way back I was shooting images through a open window in the helicopter which made it way below freezing and very windy. The unfortunate part of this was that upon bringing my camera in from the window my filter mount caught on the edge of the window and flew out and away. The only good thing about this was that it did not hit the tail rotor or i may not be typing this story right now. Well that made this flight twice as expensive as a result.....lol.....such is life.....smile, be happy!

Wonderful lighting and details, Tim, and I really admire your dedication to the craft to go to the trouble and expense of doing these shots!
Dave.

Hi Dave,
It has always been hard for me to not go all out for things that interest me. I guess what i get out of it is the incredible experiences that these pursuits lead me into. I would never have thought to try this type of thing were it not for the pursuit of photography. It really brings out in me why living here on earth is such a special opportunity not to be wasted.
I also want to thank you for taking the time to comment on so many of my images Dave.

Hi Debarshi,
We will have to trade places some time. I would love to go to India as well....but as you know life has a way of directing us to places we did not think we were heading to before for reasons we could have never predicted.

a little bit of pee just went down my pants leg.

Thanks for all the great shots for those of us who live the mountain lifestyle vicariously through you.

Of all your images this is one of the more dramatic ones. Love the lighting and the shadow covered mountain peaks. As Dave said the story is equally as good and my hat is off to you in your dedication to the craft.
