Barbara -- Thanks so much for commenting on my little friend, Nutty Boy. He is camera shy but otherwise friendly; just afraid of cameras. I have several squirrel feeders out back in addition to the bird feeders. N.B. is especially fond of peanuts.

Hi Jan!
Well it seems the eye saves the shot to some degree here . . . good pose with the clutching hands and seeds . . . but the overall clarity seems to suggest a tad bit of movement has softened the image (outside of the eye). I'll offer a couple of suggestions for you to consider, though. First, I would certainly recommend increasing the shutter speed. Faster shutter speeds are more forgiving to slight motion. I'm sure that lens has the ability to adjust exposure to the faster shutter speed by a slight change in aperture. Second, don't close in too much, shoot back so as not to clip the feet and tail and fine tune the composition if needed by cropping. (Just a couple of thoughts for you to consider . . . ).
Overall, cute shot of a cute animal and decent DOF! :)

Thanks Doyle. My back was against the wall (literally) and the light was low... Nutty Boy is camera shy so I snapped this one as fast I could get the camera up. The ISO was high, the aperture was at max and the focal length happened to be set for just over 200 mm. Without IS on this lens I was forcing the aperture to maximum and taking the highest the shutter would give me.
Given to do over, I would trap Nutty Boy, tie him to a tree and walk out there and photograph him with another of my lenses.
All above sound like excuses (NAH!) .... and they are. Nutty Boy will be mine some day for a quality photo!!! :) :)

Thanks Biljana. Other than being camera shy, Nutty Boy is very friendly. We put plenty out in the backyard for the birds and squirrels to eat; the squirrels think they are stealing (that is the fun for them) but in fact there is plenty to go around for all the little creatures.

It seems over sharpened to me. Specially the eyes. It does not look natural. Unless this is the feel you were after. I would try again in better light. What focal length was it used ? at 300mm (420mm 1.6 crop) a 1/60 shutter seems slow even with IS on ( two stops ?)

Thanks, Ed. Although it appears over-sharpened, there was minimal sharpening applied, which resulted from the default setting in the Neat Image processor to reduce noise. The well delineated eye and somewhat odd "look" resulted from the lens, a 75-300 Canon adjusted to about 250 mm. Part of the way it looks is the super shallow depth of field. Cropping was minimal but I don't recall how much was applied.
Because Nutty Boy is camera shy I took this on the fly; a quick up with the camera and took the shot. By the time I took a second look, Nutty Boy was on his way up a tree.
Shutter speed was slow ESPECIALLY with no IS.

I don't mind re-posting but it was shot in RAW; the intermediate file before final step-down to posted JPG is a PSD file which already has all post-processing, i.e. crop + Neat Image filter action. I did not use smart objects or store history. Attached is a quick & dirty export from RAW. It shows the original format before the crop. I checked the EXIF and the actual focal length was 210 mm.
