First, Robin, the 1mm Black line border is there, just inside the black framing! ;P
The settings ARE different and I like the wide open aperture too . . . usually . . . since both of us seriously appreciate that super ssallow DOF which forces the eye of the viewer to where we want it. This case is different for two reasons (though you'll note the shallow DOF is there despite the aperture.
First, a remote flash offset to avoid burning out the whiter pollen. You regularly use natural light. Doing that in this case would have gotten me less than a black BG . . . which I did not want.
Second, I stacked a 12mm, 20mm and 36mm Kenko extension tube which means light must be manually metered and the aperture adjusted accordingly. I have tried this with the faster shutter and the wider aperture but the BG just keeps popping in on me . . . albeit blurred nicely. I'll probably be posting some of them too (since I took a series)! After using a whole range of settings, I reviewed for what worked and what didn't . . . for me anyway. :P

Hi Michele . . . and thanks ever so much for your visit. Can't be both . . . this is SO minimal . . . the focal area is about the width of a dime . . . everything else blurs. The landscapes tend to maximum DOF where as much as possible is in focus! No "studio" for this one . . . just the tripod which is SO necessary for these shots. Indeed . . . it's an incredibly small section of a small blossom on a cactus. Thanks again!
