About A corner marshall shows the driver of the yellow Porsche the blue flag to warn him of a faster car approaching. This is extremely important in bad weather when the cars are surrounded by mist.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for the informative "about" comment. A race fan would just read your photograph - all the info is there! Great story-telling shot!

How fast are they going?

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 12/6/2007
Thanks Kes,
Yeah, you are right. A race fan would read the story in the image.
I would estimate that they are going only about 80mph at this point. This is normally a much faster corner in the dry. Here's a little more info. The rain had only just started a few minutes before this image was taken. So many of the cars on track were caught with the wrong kind of tires on the cars. Even the fastest cars, with the wrong (dry weather tires) will just poke around ultra slow in this weather. My guess is that the car behind was coming up very fast on the yellow car because he had "wet weather" tires fitted and the yellow Porsche had "dry weather" tires fitted. An extremely dangerous situation if the flag marshals are not on the ball.

Really you caught that so special atmosphere here, and I don't only mean the speed but also the endurance - the loneliness of the long distance runner mixed up with Le Mans! I find your approach here also very unique since most of the time it is the car that stands in perfect focus while other things, like for example corner marshalls, stand in a less prominent focus. But going the other way around you added much more interest, in the sense that the pilot is the one somewhere away in the car, trying to finish the race alone. And under that dimmed light it really goes very much into that loneliness and exposure to any kind of dangers that can be only avoided by a clear and cool mind.

A great moment!

Nick

Thanks Nick,
I think I got a little lucky with this one because of the spray from the cars causing a mist that helps to separate the view of the cars from the man with the flag. I like the way this one turned out.

Well, Andre, luck is always a part of it, but one has also to know when such a gift appears in order to take good advantage of it, like you did.

So many times such lucky coincidences would help to make a good image, and so many times I don't even notice them and I get angry afterwards.

All the best,

Nick

Hi Nick,
I know what you mean. It happens to me all the time on the way to work. I have to drive in for about 45 minutes every day. To avoid as much traffic as possible, I take some back country roads. I have seen a lot of wildlife and some great sunrises and sunsets on my way backa and forth to work. So many times I wish I had stopped. Every now and then I have stopped to get some nice little image. Like these two a couple of years ago.

And it was the right thing to do that you stopped and took the photos, Andre! Well, perhaps also with the disadvantage of some angry faces in the office, or home for the delayed arrival! ;-)

But both images were great, especially that with the house. An enormous amount of details under that very "cold" coloring makes it look really wintery and also quite solitary as a place. Rather silent, I would say, much like what we think of winter.

All the best,

Nick

Thanks for viewing them Nick.
I was coming home that day, so the only thing I was late for was dinner :)

Oh no, so you got only half a sandwitch left over? ;-)

Cheers,

Probably, Nick. :)
But I never go too hungry :)

OK, next time you get a half a yogurt! ;-)

Very cool action shot, well captured. Thanks for the explanation, too, since I would have had no clue what the blue flag was for. I like the exposure here, catching the feeling of the bad weather.

Best,
Dave

Andre Denis   {K:55922} 2/10/2008
Thanks Dave,
I think it's the bad weather that ultimately gives us some of our most interesting and unforgetable images. Anyone can go out there and shoot on a nice sunny day :)

I'm glad the explanation helped. I thought it might because there are not a lot of motor sports fans on this site.

Andre
