There is something about this that really makes it stand out. I think it is the bold background tones - they seem to complement the watery effect of the movement of the bird perfectly. The bird is not particularly sharp or detailed, but because of the overall effect does not need to be - no, change that to SHOULD not be...

Hi Doyle, am looking at what I missed, it looks a lot that I haven't seen..:) In the place in California where I stayed, there were humming birds in the garden but I just couldn't capture its image successfully. you've done a good job here with a good angle of light..

Amazing even with a 1/1600 shutter speed the wings are blurred. The composition and color combinations are fantastic. you gotta be quick to catch these guys...

ditto Tim... maybe that's why they are hummingbirds (known for their ability to hover in mid-air by rapidly flapping their wings, 15–80 times per second (depending on the species - as per Wikipedia) !!.. :)

Exactly right per the wings . . . and the variable speed does make the shot problematic. Aside from the flapping . . . the bird itself is in motion! :)

And the title is *exactly* my comment too, Doyle! It is free photography, fulfilling all needs of good photography, but still free! Rich colors, motion blur and also sharpest details, *and* that subtle grain here and there, that I seem to lile a bit too much perhaps!
The timing was quite perfect too, as it captured some natural scene in a way that it looks just as if I had been there myself, looking with my eyes and not with a camera.

This photo shoulb be very better than it,,,ican see the light is ok,and using 400 iso....if you have aprture 2,8 or faster this one look greater and high iso is not great for this kind photo.image of animal should be smooth(this is just my opinion.)

I agree . . . but aperture settings of 2.8 were not possible with this lens so I was forced to accomodate to the limitations of the lens. High ISO is not great for most pictures, is it?
