Thanks Andrzej, This one was taken a couple of days ago. But as you know the snow on the trees today made for some even better winter scenes. Have a Happy New Year! Andre

I find the rich red of the berries against the background to be of a very strong contrast here, that really enhances the contours. But even more surprising I find that the contrast of the branch against the background is strong enough too. The background may be a bit too busy but the selective focus took good care of that and gave the berries in the foreground more importance. A good idea in such cases to separate the main object from the rest through limited DoF.
Best wishes for the new and all the subsequent new years.
Nick

Oops, forgot to say:
Except of the selective focus I think that the light difference of the foreground to the background also helped enhancing the berries. You used the given situation very nicely here.
Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick, Yes, the contrast here seems to work well in colour. Just as you say, as long as the DOF is set to blur the "busy" background, everything seems in good order.
On another note, this is the kind of image that doesn't convert well to B&W because of the many similar greytones. A filter would be needed to get some contrast in B&W. Andre

Thanks a lot for the additional input on B&W, Andre! I didin't think ot that. But a small experiment of converting this one to grayscale convinced me completely of your note. Which is a good think to know when I try B&W films. I assume that many colors that do have a good contrast against each other get converted to similar gray hues, and so the contrast vanishes then. (?)

Yes Nick, There is a lot of information written about which filters to use on your lens when using black and white film. In a lot of cases our eyes see a different colour, yet on conversion to greyscale, the mid grey might be almost the same. I used to have a website bookmarked that showed the same scene taken with different coloured filters for comparison. I'm sure there are plenty of books that have the same examples too. Andre

Oh yes, and I am about to gather that information and start trying many things out, Andre! I have too filters that I never used before, so perhaps this could be a good opportunity. One thing seems to be sure - many times the B&W cannot be just a plain translation of the color image into grayscale. I'm learning! ;-)
Cheers,
Nick

Hi Nick, I think one of the most common uses for filters in B&W is to create some extreme contrast between the sky and clouds. You have most likely seen many extreme examples of that kind of thing. Sometimes people go overboard to the point of the image looking completely unnatural. Andre

Yes, and this must be the most difficult thing to do, Andre. To know when enough is enough. I guess that there is only one way to learn that, namely to try it out, and see when it's OK and when it turns the world to vanilla sunshine. It is too easy to not even notice when going overboard with that.

Hi Nick, Yes, I suppose knowing exactly how much is too much, is part of the art of photography. Another example of this kind of excess is when people do "High Key" photography. purposely overexposing to create a sort of washed out look can be a very subjective thing. I guess there is a fine line between what people call "high key" and just plain bad exposure. :) Andre

Thanks John. It is quite a popular subject, but it is pretty hard to resist that red and white contrast in the middle of a dullish winter day. Andre

I also think that there is some kind of boundary between bad exposure and high-key or any other technique, Andre. To find out where it is... I assume that it is no real sharp boundary but it depends on any possible factor one could imagine - also on the intention of the photographer, but then there has to be some intention and not just "accidental action" ;-) Still very subjective.
But one thing I take for granted, namely that too much of anything can spoil the best intentions too. We have to learn when enough is enough, be it for photography or any other kind of arts, no matter what the exaggerating fashion of the moment could say.
Once again I have to bring in mind that exciting guy, Eddie, and his guitar. You know, Andre, most people around thing that he is just filling all parts of the song with screamers and fast licks, but no! He plays only the absolutely necessary parts, but plays them unimaginably well. And with that he still hits the nails on their heads after so many years. As you once said, less is more.
Cheers,
Nick

Thanks Biljana, I think that red and white in bright sunshine is naturally joyful.
Definitely one of the prettiest and most attractive women's finals ever played. Those two certainly keep all the men's eyes glued to the tv screen. The ladies semi final was on very late at night here. I had to go to work the next day. So I went to bed when Ana was loosing 6-0, 2-0. I was amazed to see that she came back and won that match. I really like watching all of the Eastern European players because of their fighting spirit. It is great for the sport ot tennis. Andre

Hi Biljana,
Lucky for me, the match was 9:30pm live on Friday our time. :)
Of course you know your husband was only getting up at 3:30 am to appreciate the wonderful tennis.;) Nothing at all to do with watching those beautiful girls in slow motion instant replays. :) I'm sure he enjoyed the match as much as I did! Andre
