About Well our Winter is over after the grueling 3 days of rain and the 75 degree F weather permitted a trip to the rocky So. Cal coast at Pointe Vicente for sunset shots . . . a new series. This felt perfect for the 'Alone' Project.

An excellent silhouette of the fisherman on the rocks. (But what's the bright band on the horizon?)

Great light and silhouetting, Doyle!
Dave.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99061} 1/18/2008
Thanks John! The Horizon band is an air inversion layer . . . a natural phenonemon and actually VERY visible at sunset. I have several shots of an intriguing side-effect as well . . . the islands in view are mirrored inside the band upside down! Since pacific islands here are basically mountain tips . . . the inverted mirror causes an hourglass shaped island in plain view . . . flatenning as the sun descends . . . Somee of my shots almost make it look like an explosion or air floating island. It's an interesting thing to observe in the right conditions. I may have to look into posting one of those shots . . . intially I discounted the idea because they look almost unreal!

What fabulous colour! The silhouettes are wonderful. I really lke how the fisherman's rod pulls the rock and gthe unset together. Beautiful.

wow!marvelous shot!good contrast and colour!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99061} 2/3/2008
Thanks very much Mary. The Conkin Sunset filter really concentrates the orange. My concern was the unstable rocky beach, shooting long distance, handheld. Focal clarity was essential and I think I got what I was shooting for . . . without falling. Always appreciate hearing from you!

Well, I am very glad that you didn't hurt yourself getting this. Falling would not be good for you nor your camera equipment. Although I obviously was mind fogged and couldn't type when I wrote my comment, I do like how the crisp foreground is contrasted by the misty looking background and how they are joined together by the fisherman and his rod. Without the fisherman, this would be plain, with him it is very dynamic.
I am going to have to start experimenting with my filters. I now have a number of Cokin filters, but have not had the time to play with them. Your colouring in this makes me want to try them out.

Thanks Mary. This was my first playtime with the new filters. :)

You know, you're right about the fisherman. It would have been nothing without him!

Hi Doyle!

Wow property in Lawndale must have really gone up with beach front property now. I think this might be up in Palos Verdes somewhere.

Great photo. Love the silhouette of the fisherman. Just thought I would stop by the old usefilm and see what some of my old friends were up to.

Hope all is well with you!

Lisa
