About Poor Kaylee had to have some emergency surgery. She jumped over a 5 foot cyclone fence separating our dog yard from the aviary yard. Almost. She caught her claw. It was torn and required surgical removal though the Vet assured us the claw growth bed was undamaged and it would grow back. So . . . Say Hello to my little friend! (Bandages came off this week)!

She looks kind of sad about it, Doyle, but I'm glad she'll be OK!

Lovely shot even hehe... a bit ill dog :-)
the focus is good here because of lighting, the lighting hit the noise, and that was your target, even the law of portraits saying focus on the eyes, here I like it as it is.
be well Dayle!

I see the highlights on her nose and her eyes is looking as if asking for help and sympathy for her foot.
wonderful close up and portrait of Kaylee..
regards..

Thanks John! You're 100% right. I'm usually first in line to caution about getting that all-important focus on the eyes. I thought I'd try something new here (the focus on the eye would be more typical) and this way emphasize the not so happy look. The shaft of sunlight caught her muzzle at only one angle so I had to keep calling her to look at me . . . and I think she was getting tired of it. The initial shot was too shallow and the eyes too far out of focus so she looked VERY tired of it before I got this one.

Like you . . . I very much like the result . . . it gives the depth AND the feeling I was hoping to capture.

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 2/17/2008
Thanks Bobot. I went for a unique focus and crop on this one to emphasize her less than happy attitude. :) (Ain't I a rebel)?

Thanks Michele! I normally caution people to get that sharp eye focus but intentionally shot for the muzzle and combined it with an aggressive crop to emphasize the wet nose while suggesting the eyes . . . one of those instances where rules were made to be broken. Or me just trying to be a maverick. :)

Hi Doyle,
Lovely photo!! From the thumbnail it looks like a painting!!I like the angle of your shot and the emphasis on the beautiful shiny black nose, the lighting leads the eye back to those gorgeous soulful brown peepers. A gem of a picture!!

Annemette Rosenborg Eriksen   {K:55371} 2/17/2008
Oh I know about this. Asger sometimes have to remove claws on dogs or cats that are getting stucked somewhere. The claws grow out fine again, so sweet Kaylee is bound to be alright.
Be well over there:-)

Shes beautiful Doyle :)
Everyone is saying she looks sad, but I recognise it as something different - my little four legged friend had a lot of surgeries when he was alive, and the bit that made me feel bad was that he didnt look sad, he just look confused. Like, "why did you take me to that man that jabbed me with sharp stuff? And why do I feel so sleepy?" Lol.
I hope shes jumping around in no time (just not over the fence!)
I like the cropping, and the lighting is fantastic. I think the picture shows a great connection between you and Kaylee. I would be tempted to put it into the Intimate Portrait project!

All the best
-D

Doyle-
I am a push-over for dogs and have always loved the pictures you have shown us of your pups. Here we get to see the big wet nose and the baleful expression -- but I suspect that it is just for a fleeting moment. With all the love these wonderful family members get they can only feel safe and be happy. Thanks for sharing Kaylee with us.
Hope she gets well soon.
--Best regards to you and the family, Jan

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 2/18/2008
Thanks very much Dani . . . and you're absolutely right. They get confused and we who love them feel sad because we KNOW they don't understand! She's muc,h much more active already and everything seems fine!

Hello Kaylee. I hope your foot has mended. This is a great shot of you. I like the way the focus is on your nose in the light. I think that in this case, if the focus was on your eyes, it would have taken away your sadness showing. And for your pic, its good that its showing. Get well. Keith

Steve Aronoff   {K:21276} 4/23/2008
Hey, Doyle. Sorry I haven't said much lately. I've been popping in and out of Usefilm more infrequently these days. We were gone for 5 1/2 months (Australia, New Guinea, and Asia) on a dream trip ending mid-December and I still haven't gotten over the depression of being back.
It would be interesting to see how long the average stay on Usefilm is. I don't suppose anyone keeps statistics. It is nice to see that there are "old" regulars.
Kaylee looks so sweet! I like how you've framed her face. Is she a Corgy? Sweet eyes.
Best,
Steve

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 4/24/2008
Nice to see you back Steve! Not sure I would have COME back . . . sheesh . . . dream trip indeed! Don't know about the average stay here. Few left that were here in 2oo3. We've seen talent come and go, eh?

...And yep, she's a Pembroke Welsh Corgi!

Welcome home,
Doyle I <~~~~~

Brigitte R.   {K:12361} 7/13/2008
Hi Doyle... so sorry to hear about Kaylee's little incident. It is hard seeing a dog get hurt. We had to take Opie in because he ate some sand at the beach (we think it was covered in bacon grease) while out camping. He eventually had to have emergency surgery due to an intestinal obstruction, but he is ok now. Then the day before he had his staples removed we had to put Jake down... he became ill and was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of cancer. It's been so tuff on us all seeing our "little man" Jake go and having to deal with Opie's surgery, but it has been especially hard on Opie... he absolutely adored his older/bigger brother. We had him for 14 years... but it was still too short.

Very beautiful portrait of your lovely Kaylee... hope she is doing better now. Licks and sniffs from Opie and Sugar. :)

Take care,
Brigitte
