Synchronized indeed and so harmoniously that the one seems to be the visual echo of the other. And as they both have a good contrast to the water surface, it also contains some element of a collage, really! The "cuts" of their contours against the bluw water are so clear and sharp that I get the impression, they were but and pasted there. It adds also tension to the otherwise quite serene image.
Cheers!

Thanks Nick, I thought the white went well with the slate blue water. I hope they don't look like they are too falsely pasted there. :) They were actually swimming... Honest ;) Seriously, I think I know what you mean about the tension created. I think it is from the abrupt colour change, without any other colour interferring. Andre

Yes, exactly Andre! I always liked such sudden color changes with the associated strong contrast. It's not only the fact that the contours remain so sharply formed, but also that they are extremely well visible. And this goes back to the sudden color change, as you say. If the same swans were swimming, say on milk, then this effect would be almost unnoticeable.

Hi Nick, Swans on milk! What a great idea! It would be ver subtle and minimulist for sure :) I think it would work though as long as the shadow was right. Andre

Such an image would be good exercise too, Andre. Much like when the students are given an "easy" subject to paint: An egg over a white background! > In such cases it is really the very subtle essence of the shadow that has to be captured in a good way in order to preserve plasticity and contours. It can look great if well done.
Since buying the appropriate milk quantity and convincing the swans to swim in it could be slightly difficult ;-) perhaps some swans on water could be also OK for this, if the water is calm and reflects something white - snow, or a white wall?
Cheers!

Hi Nick, It is a good idea for an exercise to try an get them with a white background. The funny thing is they are here all winter, but I can't ever remember seeing them in the snow. Our geese are always walking around in the snow, but not these guys. Andre

Now that you say that, Andre... Yes, that's true! Never saw them in snow in winter here. They are always in water then. Hmmm, small kidnapping in the sense of ideal photography? ;-)
BTW, aren't your geese white too? Are they those brown ones?

Hi Nick, Occasionally we will get a few white geese mixing in with our famous Canada Geese. But, mostly it is the ones like in this image that we have here in the Toronto area. There are different kinds of geese in other parts of Canada. The Canada Goose has become quite a nuisance in the Toronto area because a lot of them have decided not to fly south anymore. We are being encouraged not to feed. They look good but they make a real mess everywhere. http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1279288

Hi Andre and thanks a lot for all the info! It seems that things are taking place that nobody would ever expect. Geese that do not fly to the south anymore... it must be that they find enough food in winter too, I assume. Well, what we find mess is not necessarily nature's opinion, and so it can get to a difficult conflict.
But they remind me of something that your fellowman, Neil Peart of Rush, once said about Toronto. It is always a happy day when "YYZ" is on our luggage tags. (YYZ is, as you perhaps already know, the intenrational code of the Toronto airport.) So, the geese seem to like Toronto so much, that they don't even fly away anymore! ;-)
Thanks a lot for the URL too. It's a real nice one for its contrast against the very white snow. And the geese do look very nice too - more elegant in a sense than the usual white ones. The white ones seem to me somehow... "plumper". But those on the image have a more "athletic" shape. Must be because they are (still) wild animals, I guess?
Cheers!
Nick

Hi Nick, Yes, the geese all have there little suitcases with their YYZ tags all piled up collecting dust. They are very atheltic and noisy. When we go for walks by the river, they are constantly taking off for little 2 or 3k circle trips in V formation. They seem to be very regimented and know exactly where they are going. :) Fun to watch. This time of year they have all paired up into twos and stopped flying around. In a couple of weeks we will have thousands more geese to worry about. :) Andre

That reminds me of some strange guys that occupied the roof that is on some of my photos - and of which we talked about because it was too dark on the images. Well those sparrows think it's funny to turn my balcony to their toilette! ;-) They also know exactly that they can find much food here - they like my shamrock! But I am developing countermeasures against the joined pirate airforces, and they seem to also like to upset me when I hunt them ;-) They just fly some meters away on the next roof, turn around, and look at me with a smile, those *%&?£-balcony-sh***ers!!! ;-)
I always found geese very impressive for their capability to fly so high if they want. There is a report of a pilot flying at about 30000ft, who at first thought he saw a formation fo stange aircrafts flying over him, and at the end it was geese! Imagine them in V formation talking to Pearson airport - "Heading 137° at 80 knots, expected landing in 2 Minutes, Pearson we got the ILS signal and stay tuned for the taxi data, over." ;-)
All of them, geese, sparrows, whatever, are also a bit like us, I guess. We also "fly" and stay in places where we find "food", our job, and our possibilities in general. Somehow we, humans, don't do anything different. So, from that point of view I do sympathize with them when I see them as just some guys who try to get along with life. And so the already mentioned "countermeasures" are rather some kind of "game" - much like trying to see who's going to get upset first! (Tht's always me! ;-))
Cheers!
Nick

Hi Nick, I think I've heard of situations where large flocks of high flying geese can actually cause trouble for aircraft, even to the point of bringing a plane down. Andre

Yes, that's true! I thought that a bird is simply a nothing in a collision with an aircraft, but they really can down it. It can be a severe damage in the turbine for example, if some bird, even much smaller that a goose, gets into it.
