That red is extemely strong, Jen! And it provided a strong and unusual contrast to the ground too! The insect is very well focused with extremely nice details.
A very good work - it could be included in some natural history book.
Cheers!
Nick
P.S.: What are those small sphere-like things right after its head? Eggs? Or only the surface of the chitin armor?

Hello zoo keeper. Thats what we call a grasshopper or locust. Havnt seen a red one. Maybe he is mad cause someone took his leg off and he has to use that walking stick that he is about to pick up. Great shot Jen. Like the way you manouvered him to the big boulders for a better background. Hugsxx Uncle Keith

Hi Jen This is the "Common Milkweed Locust" (Phymateus morbilosus) which occur over the almost the whole of South Africa (the North-Western Cape and Eastern seaboard excepted). The name derives from its favourite food plant the Milkweed(Asclepias fruticosus). The red colour is a defensive mechanism warning predators of a foul taste. If really disturbed it will excrete a foamy substance around the thorax. Females may give a threat display by raising and spreading of the wings.
This species is closely related to the Green Milkweed locust (P. leprosus) of which I have several examples in my portfolio.
Thanks for sharing! Joggie
