Very emotional photo, I really like it! As far as improving it, the bench and basket in the right are a bit distracting but nothing you can do about that. Nice work!

Gail,
Good Photo, all the elements tell a story. I would only stopp down a few stops to increase the DOF so the story elements are all sharply focused (the basket, stool/bench on steps and person. Only my opinion for what its worth. but a very nice shot non the less.

Lovely moment. A little sharper would be nice. If you can retake, then increase dof. If not, then use Photoshop or other to sharpen the edges. I think the window seems too prominent for a reflective shot like this.
