Hi Dan,
The reason this shot has the range it does it that the D300's internal software compensates for the highs and lows in this shot using something called "Active D" which allows the camera to shoot more to the way we see.....some time it works great and others I am not to sure but then i am still working this camera out.

Well the result was spectacular in this instance. It has almost created a 3d effect in this image, almost makes me feel like I am actually there. I think it is about time that we can photograph more like what we can see.
