About Shadows become whispers
sliding into sleep, dreams descending
to a new crescendo to vision turning
on its heel and reminding
in whispers as indifferent as relentless
as ocean waves
going about the business of being ocean waves.

How peaceful and meditative this image can be! Very humbling experience to be taken into this dream, to be, for one moment the spectator, and another taken into an ascetic frame of mind.

Superb composition and use of shadows.

Excellent dear Avi!

This is really nice, Avi. The flow of water likened to the flow of thoughts, silenced by meditation.

Julie Salles   {K:22597} 5/22/2008
hmmmmm...I must pay a visit :)
I am working on a NYC photo project. Any suggestions of place I must include in my itinerary?

Avi     {K:67635} 5/22/2008
I do not know much, but I can tell you the spots I would cover if I were doing it:

Betehsda (you already have that covered), Met, Brooklyn Bridge, Times Square, Financial District, Harlem (I haven't covered it yet), and maybe some of the piers into the Hudson, on the extreme west end of the Manhattan, overlooking NJ !

When are you doing this project, though ? Can I join for some time ?? :):)

Julie Salles   {K:22597} 5/22/2008
Got all those plus some you didn't mention like the bridges :)
I am starting tomorrow. Need to leave my camera for a couple hours at a shop to get the sensor cleaned and then I am off to do some shooting. Want to meet after work for a drink?
I am going to send you an email with more details :)

Avi     {K:67635} 5/22/2008

Kerry Nobbs   {K:2800} 5/28/2008
Very cool. No color version too bad. Would be interesting to see. Not sure of the border, probably does not need it as I think it stands well on its own. Lots going on with this picture it is busy with imagination. You can almost feel and hear the water flow. All the way up too. Nicely done. The figure is set in beautifully. Love it.

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:126692} 5/29/2008
And what an image for a more than well deserved "Featured Photographer", Avi! The presence of the many dark details and the motion blur of the highlights of water make the tension simply complete! Maximum! And then that black Buddha-like silhouette acts like the ever lasting truth and also hope for life in the middle of the flow!

Some things remain but they don't expect the rest to remain too. They simply let things be and are quite happy and optimistic with that. I see some cuts of the cataract that I would try to get someother way, but in this case that's irrelevant. The exactly controlled exposure found the admissible solution of the problem between light amount and duration of the shot.

BTW, how many shots did you have to try for this one? And what about settings? Any more info?

Cheers!

Nick

Avi     {K:67635} 5/29/2008
Thank you so much, dear Nicki !!

Avi     {K:67635} 5/29/2008
Thanks Nick !!

About the shot: I don't remember excatly, but I am pretty sure the f stop was 2.8 and the shutter speed was 1/6 seconds, with an ISO setting of 200.

As for no. of shots, I think I took about 7 or 8, but the position of the person was changing.. I liked this one most !

Cheers !!
Avi

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:126692} 5/31/2008
I thought already that you tried many different takes, Avi! It really "smells" after work and experimentation!

Many thanks for the data about the settings too. The DoF appears deeper than f/2.8, which is very interesting to see. The motion blur neutralized the non-focused areas - which offers a great solution of the problem of low light and at the same time a good DoF, even if it physically doesn't exist. You opened a heavy door for me with this one!

Cheers to that and thank you!

Nick

Ivona Lozic   {K:6258} 5/31/2008
Congradulations... great photo...and nice text (about)...

Avi     {K:67635} 5/31/2008
Nick, I shot this with the 50mm lens. At wide aperture values, when I am focussing at infinity, DOF is not shallow..

Avi     {K:67635} 5/31/2008
Thanks dear Ivona.. glad you like it. best, Avi

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:126692} 6/2/2008
So the "fuzzy" feel is only to be attributed to the motion blur of the flowing water, and this is quite an intereseting thing to know, since it allows what is impossible when focusing infinity, exept for the very very near field which will be out of focus then. Looking at specific regions I see that they are inside the DoF, but the whole impression makes me think that only the silhouette of the sitting person is in the DoF - a trick of the eye perhaps, but quite a good one to me.

BTW, wide apertures always introduce softer focus regions of depth no matter of focal length, but if they are outside the range of visible things they are simply "not there". Some hypothetical very near object would likely be out of focus on this one, but here there is nothing near the lens, and so we don't have anything for "visual comparison". I guess that this impossibility of direct comparing plays that game with my eyes. Very very interesting!

Cheers!

Nick

Maja Godec   {K:15037} 6/2/2008
excellent!!!!!!

Avi     {K:67635} 6/4/2008
I have used dodge and burn in some areas to bring out the whiteness of the water. I have attached the original for you to see.

original

luis pereira   {K:22570} 6/5/2008
Well...you got 94 people tell you how great it is so there's no reson for me to spoil you.

Avi     {K:67635} 6/5/2008
but the learning never stops for me. so please don't hold back.. if anything, it will only help me !

cheers !!
Avi

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:126692} 6/6/2008
Thanks a lot for the info and the original image, Avi! I would have only think of burning the silhouette of the man, but would likely never have thought of going as far as you did!

The original makes it also clearer to me how clever the choise of the composition was. It kept the whole absolutely nearest depth range out of sight, that could otherwise eventually start getting out of focus. I try a hyperfocal setup most of the time in such cases, but this is another good way to get rid of the nearest field.

Thanks a lot!

Nick

Mohsen Bayramnejad   {K:21827} 7/6/2008
Avi, Man! youre awesome! I missed so much of your works.
not sure how to say the feeling, this image deserves more than any word. words are so confined, at least for me!
love the way you look, simple and symbolic, yet creative, however, you were excited at time, I guess.
your post-process, use of light and contrast...it makes your work awesome! love the waves of water, and it's dramatic feeling, and the man, I call him the prayerful...
he's Silhouetted in your image, but it's acceptable, because he's in the middle of a forceful energy center, the water, someting praiseworthy in all the cultures...
I do love this work, something tranquil for my eyes...
thanks for sharing, keep going!

Mohsen Bayramnejad   {K:21827} 7/6/2008
