Looks like A Chinese umbrella. Beautiful and soft colours here. I can find these umbrellas everywhere I look over here but have yet to photograph any of them.
The Chinese character for umbrella is 傘 ("san" in pinyin), which itself looks like an umbrella.

Are they actually used over there for shade or are these more for the tourist.? I have three of them in beautiful colors and always want to find a way to use them.

You wont see these paper umbrellas in use too often here, outside of some ceremonial use. Most women and some men do carry ordinary umbrellas around all the time though, for use in rain and to keep the sun off of them.
