About A cactus (plural: cacti, the word derives from Greek, thus the Latin plural "cacti" is etymologically inappropriate, though it is frequently used nonetheless as is otherwise singular "cactus") is any member of the succulent plant family Cactaceae, native to the Americas. They are often used as ornamental plants, but some are also crop plants.

Cacti are distinctive and unusual plants, which are adapted to extremely arid and hot environments, showing a wide range of anatomical and physiological features which conserve water. Their stems have expanded into green succulent structures containing the chlorophyll necessary for life and growth, while the leaves have become the spines for which cacti are so well known.

Cacti come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. The tallest is Pachycereus pringlei, with a maximum recorded height of 19.2 m. and the smallest is Blossfeldia liliputiana, only about 1 cm diameter at maturity.
Cactus flowers are large, and like the spines and branches arise from areoles. Many cactus species are night blooming, as they are pollinated by nocturnal insects or small animals, principally moths and bats. Cactuses' sizes range from small and round to pole-like and tall.

Prickly pears (genus Opuntia) were imported into Australia in the 19th century to be used as a natural agricultural fence and to establish a cochineal dye industry, but quickly became a widespread weed. This invasive species is inedible for local herbivores and has rendered 40,000 km² of farming land unproductive.

This last part specially for Keith and Tony,
so now you know how these prickle things came
there, just like the rabbits and camels:)))

Enjoy a smooth and happy day! Jenxx

Hangten is a brand of sports wear that has a logo of two feet viewed from the bottom.. we have cactus here too but I am not sure if it is indigenous here.
oh so that is water at the background.
regards Jen

Julie Salles   {K:16703} 6/5/2008
Oh yeah hang ten all the way!!!!!!

Hanging Ten is a surfing maneuver, considered one of the most impressive and iconic stunts one can perform with a surfboard. Hanging ten is when the surfer positions the surfboard in such a way that the back of it is covered by the wave and the waverider is free to scootch to the front of the board, hang all ten toes over the nose of the board, all while holding two "high fives" up in the air as a celebratory indication of this feat.

Absolutely great capture dear Jen. Great colors, details, light and DOF. I love your title as well. You're so talented my friend. Can't wait to see what you will bring us back from SA.
Hope you are having a nice day. Is there any cake left? I need a piece to sweeten my day a bit.
Big hug and kiss,
Julie.

Ugo Rimoldi   {K:6190} 6/5/2008

You wearing sandals .... yes ..... good combination !

Jen van Wijn   {K:19270} 6/5/2008
Now I'm happy with your about dear Bobot, I cant remember I have seen this, but I will make sure
to discover this brand in South Africa in 3 weeks, there do surfing a lot and all year long, in cold and freezing weather.....
Yes the sea is behind, maybe a pity it isnt clear,
but gave quite a different background:)
Be well dear

Jen van Wijn   {K:19270} 6/5/2008
Thanks a lot my darling, now I know exactly what its like as I have been watching this for hours in January in South Africa, wishing and longing I could do this, but I tried it and bodysurfing was the only thing I could hang on with my toes and that was even difficult.....lollllll

Now, I am really getting nervos my dear, please dont have any expectations about SA, as I dont know what will happen there, its wintertime, so hardly any flowers I suppose, no leaves maybe, ice, cold and trying to survive with Char:))
I still have these soesjes left you dont want, because of the chocolate...pity you!!! And the girls ate the rest of the cake, I was too late as well:)))
So you have to get some yourself today, could just give you some cappuccino, my fav coffee....yummm!! Big kisses and hugs, Jenxx

Hello dear Ercole, thank you so much for explaining my dear, as we dont have these I wouldnt know how to peel them...loll
Suppose there must be a special way for that not to get all these pins in your hands.....:))
