| About |
Windsurfing is a surface water sport using a windsurf board, also commonly called a sailboard, usually two to five meters long and powered by a single sail. The rig is connected to the board by a free-rotating flexible joint called the Universal Joint (U-Joint). Unlike a rudder-steered sailboat, a windsurfer is steered by the tilting and rotating of the mast and sail as well as tilting and carving the board. This method of controlling the board's direction is called the free-sail system.
The sport combines aspects of both sailing and surfing, along with certain athletic aspects shared with other board sports like skateboarding, snowboarding, waterskiing, wakeboarding and kitesurfing. Although it might be considered a minimalistic version of a sailboat, a windsurfer offers experiences that are outside the scope of most other sailing craft design. A windsurfer holds the world speed record for sailing craft; and windsurfers can perform jumps, inverted loops, spinning maneuvers, and other "freestyle" moves that cannot be matched by any sailboat. Windsurfers were the first to ride the world's largest waves, such as Jaws on the island of Maui, and, with very few exceptions, it was not until the advent of tow-in surfing that waves of that size became accessible to surfers.
Windsurfing includes speed sailing, slalom, course racing, wave sailing, superX, and freestyle as distinct disciplines. Though windsurfing is possible in winds from near 0 to 50 knots, the ideal planing conditions for most recreational sailors is 15-25 knots, with lighter winds resulting in displacement mode sailing.
Hoping you have a great time windsurfing AJ, using the force of water and your own strength!! You should try this area of Capetown one day, really great for playing around, with Tablemountain on the background...woww;)) Keep your head up:) xxJen

A spectacular location at the "other" end of Africa. I like the way the colour of a few of the sails stands out against the generally subdued tones of the image.
Certainly this area has a reputation for great sailing, and those clouds up on Table Mountain are a sure sign of good conditions. But I've also heard the stories about the sharks...
Looks like we've got another day of 30 knots here in Tarifa, so it's not going to be such a lazy Sunday...

impressive view, I like the colours here of the surfer's elements against the almost desaturated area because of the weather conditions... impressive background too about the huge clouds and the big mountain that looks like almost...ON the city. be well!

Spectacular view from the other side of the cape. I was imagining the site of the mountain from the early explorers of the tip of Africa. I could imagine the current so strong here being in between two oceans. wonderful capture Jen of these windsurfers with the buildings at the background and also the enormous mountain. wonderful shot, thanks for sharing.. regards..

Great capture dear Jen. I love how impressive those mountains look against the windsufers. Great clouds as well my friend. I used to windsurf sometimes in Brazil with a friend of mine, such a fun thing to do. I hope you are having a nice Sunday. It is going to awfully hot again today, about 38 so I am staying in :) Big hug and kiss, Julie.

Blouberg is paradise for surfers, as soon as I saw a storm was coming up, I went to this beach to see them struggling, its was very very windy, people from all over the world surfing all up and down...wowww
Sharks are everywhere on that coastline, at Muizenberg they have these shark spotter even, I did talk to them for a while, specially the white sharks are coming quite close.....
Hopefully you had a great time surfing and not swallowing too much seawater all together! Maybe you can get all the way to Africa too while surfing:) Wishing you a healthy sleep, after all this water force fighting, xxJen
