Excellent!!!!
Julie.

Tony Smallman   {K:15411} 6/8/2008
All the additives they put into milk these days you wouldn't know this is milk-looks like melted wax!Nice job, you've got this technique down to a fine art.
best Wishes, Tony

Mitra Nademi-Nassari   {K:14312} 6/8/2008
Excellently done, AJ. Beautiful drop. Although I like the color but I still take my milk white! :)

Thank you, Julie. I'm not sure if you realise how appropriate your "you got it" comment is. I've been working on these drops on and off for a couple of years, and I think I may indeed being getting to the point where I can say I've got it! Now that I've got the technical issues sorted, I can concentrate on shaping the drops and splashes themselves...

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 6/8/2008
Thanks Tony. As I said to Julie, I think I've now got the technique sorted so can concentrate on the forms of the drops and splashes themselves.

Many thanks, Mitra. Just a little food colouring added, so all the milk can be reused after the photo-session. Makes the coffee look a little strange, though...

Julie Salles   {K:15885} 6/8/2008
I remember a conversation we had a while back where you told me about the "issues" with the Nikon camera you were using so I am glad you got it :) keep on showing us, I love it!

Riny Koopman   {K:57765} 6/8/2008
I can only praise such a nice Macro with Arms Wide Open, good work AJ!!

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 6/8/2008
Yes Julie - the trick is to disable all the "Nikon specific" contacts. A piece of tape stuck over them is enough to do this, cutting a hole in the middle so that the central contact still connects. I wasn't sure if this was going to work, so bought a cheap "cloned" flash unit to try it out. And sure enough, I can now sync up to the fastest shutter on the camera!

Many thanks Riny - there may be many more of these over the coming weeks as my hit rate has suddenly reached "critical mass"!

Jen van Wijn   {K:18174} 6/9/2008
Knowin exactly what you mean dear AJ, I tried this over and over again...it looked so easy when others have a shot like this, but hell it was frustrating me and some of my friends, so gave up as you need a much faster camera;)) Having been hanging under taps for ages!! Give me an elephant moving slower and being bigger:)))
Really proud you did it and looking forward to see more of these, great presentation!!
xxJen

Meg Metcalfe   {K:5859} 6/10/2008
You nailed it with this one AJ. :)

Just remebered that I didn't let you know that we finally made it to Spain. We have bought a house near Alora on the road to El-Chorro. We are loving every minute of life here!

Keith  Growden   {K:18432} 6/12/2008
Awesome AJ. Timing spot on. Tried it once by holding a dripper and remote control but couldnt figure out when it was going to drop lol. Didnt come out this good. Well done. Cheers Keith

Marian Man   {K:64056} 6/12/2008

Many thanks, Meg. Great to hear from you, and to learn that you have finally made it down here. Actually, we were down your way just a couple of weeks ago as we have friends living just north of Coin. Now I'm looking forward to lots more photos from you!

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 6/12/2008
Thanks Keith. And yes, the timing is crucial!

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 6/12/2008
Many thanks, Marian. I have tried adding various substances to the liquids I have used, in order to change the effect, but this one is just plain milk with a little food colouring added. Oh, and full-fat works better than skimmed!

AJ

Saeed Al Shamsi   {K:47535} 6/13/2008
As of the form and the quality of the shot,, marvelous,, may be the background colour should be a lighter to lit the "drop" figure out perfectly and appears separated from the ground.
though super work.

Too awesome for words....I stand and applaud!

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:99493} 7/6/2008
(1) Told you so.
(2) Where in God's name do you buy your milk? Eeeew.

Way to go, John!

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 7/6/2008
Yes Doyle, but:

1) My thinking was also correct, in that I DID have to tape off the "Nikon specific" contacts in order to fool the D70s into thinking there was no flash mounted, leaving the central contact uncovered so that the flash still fired. ((And BTW, the flash is something from StarBuster, StarBlaster or somesuch, since I wasn't prepared to fork out for an SB800 when I couldn't be sure it would do the job. I did surreptitiously attempt to try an SB800 in the shop on my "modified" machine, but the shop assistant ripped the offending tape off before mounting the test model...)

2) Everything is going green these days. Even milk (if you leave it out of the fridge long enough...)

AJ

Joggie van Staden   {K:41251} 7/8/2008
Excellently done - agree with Doyle on the milk colour. Really think shifting the balnce to a pure white would make the image crisper and even better than it is already! Fine work AJ
Joggie

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 7/8/2008
Many thanks for your detailed critique, Joggie. The initial objective of this session was to drip green water drops into white milk. After a while the green dye had got everywhere... I do have pure white drops and green drop/white milk combinations which I will no doubt post eventually!

AJ

Srna Stankovic   {K:106748} 7/8/2008
Do I see the master peace here AJ ... yep, I do !!!
Way to go dear friend, compliments :)))
What to critique when I do visit your portfolio ... always the same question, hahahahahaha ?!
You are great !!! :)))
Always the best and a hug,
Srna

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 7/8/2008
You are very kind, Srna, but there are always improvements to be made! And I can't believe you actually LIKE those colours!?

AJ

Srna Stankovic   {K:106748} 7/8/2008
Hahahahah, oh, I love them cause of their ugliness and they was useful to you ;)

Nicole Besch   {K:50384} 7/22/2008
So you have green milk in your country...LOL!!!Only kidding!! What a fantastic work...just amazing!!!I like this macro with the great details and these colors:))!Very sharp and clear as well.
PERFECT AJ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Best regards,Nicole

AJ Miller   {K:44211} 7/22/2008
Thanks Nicole - normally the milk is only green if you forget to put it in the fridge!

AJ

Dave Arnold   {K:55551} 7/28/2008
