Nice one Eb - the natural setting is great! It seems to have a tinted sheild over the eyes - some info?

Hi Joggie! I definitely should get into the habit of entering more info on some of my postings! This specimen, about 3 ft., is the common Garter Snake, of the genus Thamnophis. This is the most common snake in North America, however, with considerable variations in markings. They are harmless and only slightly venomous. The blue covered eyes are a mystery. I can guess that it might be due to the fact that the snake had recently moulded. There were a number of casings laying about. I was trying to get an image with the tongue but was unsuccessful; went back to the car to get a macro lens and, returning, could not find it again. Usually they are so elusive that they will not pose for a photo, as this one had.

Hi Eb - I think you are correct. All true snakes have a permanent shield covering the eyes - they have no eyelids to close them. This one's sheild must have been moist and may also be the reason why it gladly pose for you! Regards.
Joggie
