About This shot is a bit out of my usual stuff and the effect was all done in camera.

I almost didn't even bring a camera to fireworks last night but at the last minute I decided to grab one along with a tripod. This was my last shot of the night taken at the very end of the finale.

For fireworks, I find that total manual control of the camera is best - manual focus (set at infinity), ISO 100, f/16 and the shutter speed set to bulb. I used a remote shutter release and held the shutter open to capture several bursts. For this shot I had held the shutter open for a couple of bursts - you can see two of them, one at the top right (kind of faint) and the other in the middle. For the last burst, I zoomed the lens. This gave me two bursts unmodified and the third and brightest burst zoomed. What looks (to me) like a starfield is actually the debris from the exploding shells.

As soon as I saw what I had on the LCD the name Starship Overdrive popped into my head (a little bit hokey but that's what came up). When I got home and looked at the shot on the big monitor I liked it even more.

I did use PS to crop and adjust levels as I would do for any photo but the effect was done completely in the camera.

Great shot Jim, I really like the height and clarity. Very cool. My home fireworks display was not quite that inspiring but I had some good practice for the big show down the road someday. Thanks for your comments as well. Be well and have a great weekend, Stan

I know the first time and only time years ago it was a disaster for me on fireworks. I will try again now that I know how to photograph better. I like the angle. Excellent photograph and capture.
