About This is a repost of a snake shot from July7 that I have used the other shot I had taken with the head in focus. I was ask to repost this by a couple of people that said the head in focus was the key. This shot was taken at 1/400, f5.0,ISO400, at 190mm with Sigma 70-300 zoom. I was set up for shooting some bird shots when I got in the middle of this guy. Did not have time for perfection at this point. This is dedicated to Martin for his help and critique of my work in the effort to help me along. His friendship and knowledge are a blessing. Thanks Martin.

They are harmless but extremely dangerous looking with a false reputation of using their tails ..good stuff Stan!

Don't wanna be U taking this picture.... :) But the result is really great!!

Stan  Hill   {K:10028} 7/12/2008
Yes Arif, when I almost stepped on him he became quite disturbed. They are very defensive so I took a couple of quick shots and left him alone.
Be well, Stan

Stan  Hill   {K:10028} 7/12/2008
Riny, they bite and venom are actually poison. Had a friend bit in leg that was hospitalized for a week and still has dead skin around the bite area on his leg. I lost a dog to one several years ago. If you are bitten and can stay calm and have help nearby it is not as bad as being in a remote area. The anti venom is usually necessary if the bite punctures the skin and gets in the blood stream. I respect them and let them have their space.
Be well, Stan

Hi Dave, he was ready to go but I left before we could rumble. I have had a lot of rattler experiences over the years but remain upright and free. Got bit in my fishing waders one day but the fangs did not penetrate. Sure got my attention. The snake was over 4 foot long which is big for a Timber Rattlesnake. Was about as round as a pop can. I was a little shaken on that one.
Be well, Stan

Thanks Emanuela for the comment. I was surprisingly calm during the encounter. They always have my respect. Not afraid, just respectful.
Be well, Stan

Stan,

That's the ticket "Big Boy"!

Not sure how much help I have ever been, but you have the eye ol' friend...

It's an honor and a privilege to have worked with you my brother!

This 1 belongs in National Geographic, indeed... ;)

It's the stuff! Nuff said!

Well done and all of my "Love" goes out to You and Yours!

Martin

Stan  Hill   {K:10028} 7/13/2008
Thanks Marty, a capture can be worth a lot of words.
These amazing creatures stir so many feelings from people. I guess the Adam and Eve thing give the snake a lot of fear and loathing. I have lived in snake country most of my life and am fascinated at their adaptive colors and different MO's. How's project Jack doing? Family sends love back and keep well. Your friend, Stan.

Stan  Hill   {K:10028} 7/13/2008
Marty, I will download and email this morning. Thanks for the kind words and help on this one. I was not sure about reposting it but your encouragement got me to put it up.
Be well, Stan

Stan  Hill   {K:10028} 7/13/2008
Ania, you should have seen the big brother. this time of year they blend into the grass very well. There pattern really does a good job for camo. This one was about 1 meter long. Not big but he got my attention.Be well my dear and have a good day,Stan

Stan Ciszek   {K:29429} 7/13/2008

Stan,

Sorry for sending 4 copies of the same message, but it kept telling me the site didn't work. So I kept sending it... hehehe

I see others have had the same problem as of late. I'm still not getting e-mails on comments made, so I guess that they are have some tech problems with the site...

Marty

Stan,
Shame on anyone for critique'ing this badly...Obviously these kind of shots are very spontaneous and everyone should know you take what you get! It's a wonderful image(and as I am a herpetologist, I should know a good rattlesnake shot when I see one!) LOVE IT...GREAT JOB my friend! Watch out where you walk next time though!

Stan  Hill   {K:10028} 7/18/2008
Hi Laurie, Have missed seeing you out there. Thanks for the great comment and seeing my ornery little friend in a positive light. I seem to have my share where I live at, but they are great mousers.
Be well, Stan
