About Rework of an old image. Uploaded at a special request of a very dear friend.

Cricket: This is the game I have grown up playing and dreaming about. A very popular game in India, it is not played by many countries in the world. In India, kids grow up playing it in the streets.. as you can see in this picture.

I love it Avi, You really captured the utter joy these kids are having. I really like the kid with his hands on his knees. I think he'll be a Pro???
Bill

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 7/19/2008
Thanks Bill. Unfortunately, I don't think that kid will grow up to be a pro. These are street children, they live a very poor and difficult life.. often get no education and have to work even in their childhood. This is a still a very big issue in third world countries.. we try and do our bit, but alas, we are largly outnumbered by the needy.

Have a good weekend, my friend.
Avi

omar hamilton   {K:-8} 7/19/2008
Does it matter...the West Indies mop you up anyways...if they put that kid on the India/ pakistan team no one will know the difference

looking at the condition of the current WI team, if india put up a side with these street children, they will win every match against WI :-) be it T20 or ODI or test :-)

Francisco N-G   {K:27117} 7/20/2008
Outstanding image dear Avi. The low point of view and angle really pull the viewer into the game as another participant. The tension is frozen with great intensity, not only with the perplexed expression of the players, that are concentrated on the performance of the batter, but most importantly, with the ball coming straight at us.

Amazing capture of the environment; remarkable work!

Well done!

F.

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 7/20/2008
thanks very very much, Francisco ! cheers !! Avi

Jason Mckeown   {K:19846} 7/21/2008
Great capture Avi, from one old cricketer to another you've captured the childhood dream of every kid to play for their team well done my friend. cheers Jason

Mark Mellen   {K:1792} 7/21/2008
This photograph says so much and the viewer naturally feels it.. Capturing such a moment in time either brings back memories from the past or puts a viewer into a place they normally won't go or haven't been. Each child so intent on the game adds to the feel. many times a photographer misses the mood only capturing the image in this shot you got it all.. well done!!! Mark

Gary Hill   {K:33604} 7/21/2008
I like the old fashioned newspaper clipping look of this image, Avi. A good line and length, both from the bowler and the photographer. They might be poor but he looks like he's got a decent bat. I remember when I was in India (back in the mid 80s)and people heard I was from Australia, cricket was always an easy way to start a conversation.
Regards, Gary

Robert Chin   {K:20943} 7/21/2008
That`s my game too Avi but WI in the basement right now,no
planning,talent not enough!!
The fun these kids are having regardless of the situation
does eases the pain.
Take care
Robbie

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 7/21/2008
I know Robbie.. it's sad.. After the greats of the WI cricket, there has been a sharp decline in talent.. except for maybe Lara, who also (I felt) played a lot for himself and not for the team..

Robert Chin   {K:20943} 7/21/2008
Yep but the biggest problem was/is 'the leadership
and selectors is not doing anything for the long term.Kanhai when he was the manager was sacked because he was instilling descipline, not to mentioned Marshall & others.
Take care
Robbie

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 7/22/2008
true.. true.. you know, I liked Carl Hooper a LOT as a captain.. but he clearly had issues with Lara, and I dunno if with the selectors too..

the other issue is that I feel young boys from the WI are nowadays going much more into more 'physical' sports like boxing or basketball or athletics.. simply because they pay more ?

Robert Chin   {K:20943} 7/22/2008
Carl Hooper had so much talent BUT mentally weak,he could be destroying the and get out bowling and then out so softly. Not a very popular player in the WI because of that.
Here is our Cricket site,it can be rough there!!!
Rumshop is cricket ,Backroom non-cricket.

opps..
...he could be destroying the bowling and then get out so softly...
Robbie

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 7/22/2008
yes, I know.. he had that laziness, which caused his downfall many times. In fact, I have seent (and liked) that laziness in many WI greats .. like Sir Viv (not comparing, of course..).. it was just that Carl did not play with a more talented bunch of players.. plus, he wasn't too motivating. Of recent players, I have noticed that kind of lazy elegance in Marlon Samuels.. but he too, is very inconsistent.

Thanks for the site !!

Nick Karagiaouroglou   {K:97660} 7/22/2008
And it gained so much power, Avi! It is almost an "old documentary" in its looks, but combined with a still very touchable sharpness on the boy on the front! The atmosphere of the street is a very "live" one! Actually right in the middle of life! I'd wish I could see the feet of the boy at the left, but that's my only wish.

I find it reall interesting that the expression on the faces of the kids at the depth is still so immediately visible despite the soft focus there. I can really see the tension and awareness for the next move of their game! I think that together with the tension on the back of the guy with the club, this is what gives such a strength to this one!

Cheers!

Nick

fotogr@vi     {K:52910} 7/22/2008

Riza Turak   {K:88} 7/27/2008
Superb...It remided me my childhood. We used to have street games.New generations lost that happy childhood moments.I am glad somewhere in this world there are some kids they enjoy being a child even they live in poverty.
