About Water scouts (zeeverkenners) in their small iron boats get a lift from a professional river vessel.

Sunday afternoon on the Zaan river : professional and leisure activities mix up.
Inland navigation is a widespread commercial activity in several parts of the Netherlands.

WATER SCOUTS:

Water-or Sea scouting is a popular activity in The Netherlands
In the Netherlands there are about 300 Sea Scout Groups. Approximately 32 % of the Sea Scouts are girls. The total fleet of all Dutch sea scout groups consists of 54 guard ships, 120 tugboats and motorboats, 100 Lelieschouwen, 1,550 Lelievletten (iron sailboat for 6 persons) and 40 Juniorvletten (smaller size of the Lelievlet). Sea Scouting has its own sections for many age groups, but Cub Scout and Beaver Scout Sections can also be a part of the Group. Officially, there are specialised sea scout programs for 8 years and older.

From 8 to 12 years of age, Dutch sea scouts are called Dolfijnen (dolphins). They are like Cub Scouts but with a story about a dolphin island. Dolfijnen use canoes or Juniorvletten. There are about 2,150 Dolfijnen in the Netherlands. Members are called Water Scouts from 12 to 16 years or more often Zeeverkenners.
Water Scouts (which number 5,400 in the Netherlands) use boats called Juniorvletten or Lelievletten.

LOCATION:

West-Knollendam is a town in the Dutch province of North Holland. It is a part of the municipality of Zaanstad, The village is located by the Zaan River.

The Zaan river was originally a side arm of the IJ bay. It runs about 10 kilometers through the municipality of Zaanstad ("Zaan City") north of Amsterdam, from West-Knollendam in the north to Zaandam in the south, where it empties into the IJ in Amsterdam.

The river runs past the Zaanse Schans, a village with historic windmills and houses. It is one of the popular tourist attractions in the Netherlands.

French impressionist painter Claude Monet stayed in Zaandam in the summer of 1871 and produced a series of 24 paintings of the Zaan district, writing to his friend Camille Pissarro that, "there is enough here to paint for an entire lifetime". Monet returned to the Zaan district to paint during visits to the Netherlands in following years.

Thank you dear Julie, I was in Haarlem, not Harlem yesterday and I looked "around" the old rectangular bricks for similarities you showed me. Didn't find the same exactly but I looked so much better thanks to your lessons.
I'll be back in Paris tonight.

Paul

Paul de Beukelaar   {K:12813} 7/31/2008

glad that you liked it,
hugs and kisses,
Paul

Vriendelijke groet,
Paul
