A typical small town street in China.
To desaturate, I did the following:
Opened the color photo(RGB) - went to the image menu (under Mode) and chose Lab Color -> channels pallette and clicked on lightness -> again to the image menu under Mode and chose Grayscale -> Clicked OK to discard color -> Went back to image menu and clicked on RGB -> Image adjustment - Brightness/Contrast and 'dialled in' necessary adjustments.
The results seem to be fine using this method.
