About “And I say unto you, squander not your time in the gaming houses and the bars. Beware the Devil’s Dice my friend, and their firey tails from Hell. Resist their ivory temptation, for you can never win at Satan’s Chance. I stand before you and declare: the Devil’s work is everywhere.” (A. Lietold, 1796-1842)

As usual, serious critiques are welcome.

Fantastic creative work, AJ. Love the phrase that goes with it, especially the part about the "firey tails" which you've so wonderfully recreated with the great color and slow shutter. Also very clever of you to place one of the dice in the foreground with the focus on it throwing the rest of the moving dice out of focus. A work of genius! 7/7

Best regards,
Brigitte

Excellent dynamic image and very beautiful phrase about it.

Remembered the song of " Spanish Train " by Chris de Burgh.

Very interesting!

Jen van Wijn   {K:23886} 10/29/2008
Still gambling here I see:) Thats what I miss right now, a macro lens, this is greatly done, doesnt seem like a still life to me, if I see this I know I have still lots to learn......which is good for me:)
Hugs Jen

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 10/29/2008
Many thanks, Jen. I agree with you about the "still life" category - this scene is definitely not still! But I understand that this is the correct category when applied to photography. Please let me know if I am wrong!

As to the macro lens, yes it's great, but it's the first one that gets left at home when I am travelling due to being less flexible than my other lenses.

Many thanks, Brigitte. Your comment is very kind and much appreciated.

Interesting that you picked up on the dice in the foreground - this was totally intentional but was questioned in the previous image "Tumbling". Maybe it works better in this one.

As to the "firey tails", well there's a hint about that reference in the name of the alleged author of the words...

"There's a Spanish train that runs between
Quadalquivir and old Seville..."

Even the location is pretty much spot on! It had occurred to me, but I decided to introduce my own play of words...

Many thanks for your kind comment and astute memory, Aziz.

Superb macro work! Well done! Best regards!

Saad Salem   {K:66798} 10/29/2008
you have just managed to convert the script in your mind into a photo, exactly like Hollywood people when transforming a written script into a movie,so you are the author, photographer, and director,my best regards,
Saad.

Wonderful words to provide an excellent choice of title for this amazing second throw of the dice AJ. Fantastically innovative and highly creative. I love the blurred movement in the four spinning die in complete contrast to the static one. I love too the hint of subtle colour tone born from the lighting element. Beautifully and thoughtfully composed plus a perfect presentation. I wish I had the knowledge to be as creative my friend. Probably too long in the tooth to experiment out of my comfort zone Well done AJ, first class with no faults that I can see. My very best wishes as always.....Ray

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 10/29/2008

Many thanks for your kind comment, Saad, and for your analysis of my work. Just one thing, though: the image came before the story! (Unless it was already there in my subconscious...)

James Cook   {K:37613} 10/30/2008
I take it then that this is a single shot? Nicely arranged. Must have taken quite a few clicks to get it exactly correct.

You know I love the motion, of course.

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 10/30/2008
It is indeed a single shot, James. I've just done a quick check and it seems I took about 200 shots over 3 or 4 sessions. But actually, after a little experimentation with lighting, a high proportion turned out OK. The ones I'm putting on UF are just a few that I particularly like, perhaps because of the arrangement of the dice, the shape of the tails or the numbers that are showing.

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 10/30/2008
Actually, this was about the hundredth throw, Ray, although overall I was pretty happy with the success rate... Many thanks for your kind and thoughtful comment - and go stretch the boundaries of your comfort zone a little!

Thank you, Marian. The title was originally inspired by the numbers on the three central dice.

John Hatz   {K:156912} 11/1/2008
Again great work, and also I like that the one dice is sharp and the others at the back have the motion blur, excellent work, love that the blur parts looks like ...fire... hehehe... also almost to get 5 dices with the No6 on the side we watch... almost! :-D
be well my friend.

Wolf Zorrito   {K:46469} 11/1/2008
AJ.
I still keep stumbling about that one still dice. I would love to see it moving as well, slowly then. IMHO of course.
Be well

Haha, you're like me: keep shooting until the fates obey.

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/2/2008
Thanks John, but surely just three sixes MUST be the most appropriate number here!

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/2/2008
Well thank you Srna, your comment is very kind.

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/2/2008
Actually Harry, there does appear to be just a touch of motion blur on the right side of the "still" dice. Drat, I must have knocked it with one of the others!

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/2/2008
Many thanks, Ornella.

Yorgos Tsementzis   {K:30} 11/3/2008
I studied finance, professors most commonly use examples from gambling to describe probability, not only is this a fantastic shot, but could easily be used in a finance text book! brilliant

excellent capture, great details!

art mccaffrey   {K:5428} 11/4/2008
greetings aj,. good to see the pro in you progressing,. & i wonder how it would have looked on green beige,. proberbly without the impact it has on black,. excellent work aj,. regards art,.

Rina     {K:27299} 11/11/2008
Can't help thinking you must have gone through a lot of dice ;) How long have you got to shoot before they turn black or melt? And... is your house still standing?? ;P

Clifton Jones   {K:12141} 11/12/2008
MAGIC.....outstanding............

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/15/2008

Many thanks, Art - good to see you here again! I did consider other colours but none had the same impact as black.

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/15/2008
One thing I did discover, Rina, is just how far dice can travel once they drop off the table and hit the marble floor... They seem to have some sort of internal guidance system - if the door is open they will be through it like a shot and be off down the stairs before the flash has faded away.

AJ

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/15/2008
Many thanks, Clifton.

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100924} 11/24/2008
Extraordinarily innovative John! I've missed watching the creativity bloom from some...like yourself. NICE! (I'll be looking at more of your stuff as I get more time...)

I'm still seeing this as so crfeative and unique...i can think of nothing I've seen like it. That said, I'm curious about the back right die. It seems to have a deflected vapor trail...but without a bounce?? What up with that buddy??

Regards,
Doyle I <~~~~~

AJ Miller   {K:49168} 11/26/2008
I'm very pleased to see you here again, Doyle! I find that UF has become quite a happy place once more, but is still missing a few faces such as yourself.

Many thanks for your kind comment on this one. I guess the bounce of the die on the right was just a little shallower than the others and further back.

AJ

Doyle D. Chastain   {K:100924} 11/26/2008
Thanks for the welcome back John....it's good to be back!
