Great shot Avi.
Not sure you need the top and bottom borders on this one, I think it would have been even more dramatic with out them.
All the best, Ed

Another very informative 'about' my dear Avi to accompany your dramatically monochromatic toned composition. An amazing scenario of this vast area with just you the photographer (invisible, of course) and this lone traveller. A nicely balanced study with excellent depth, well done my dear friend. My very best wishes to you as always.....Ray

fist the good points: fantastic POV and DOF; composition is a must, love how the chap is looking to the empty space, you have captured the essence of rural Africa so that, overall, the image is very good and I like very much the bad points: you should improve your BW conversion technique, for excellence you should not clipped the higlights and shadows, look at the hystogram; the head of the man looks like a black spot, at least his nape should be illuminated; you should work in different layers or at least with a program that allows you work area by area; non-destructive burning and dogging is the key point; not crazy with the tone as well, but this is just my taste hope this helps take care.....jd

I think this is one of your best images Avi. I accept Txules's criticism (I actually thought it looks like one of his, processed in one of his lighter moods, perhaps!)but there's something effective for me having the guy's head as a silhouette. His pose and his looking into the frame are perfect. The clouds are amazing. The road leading who knows where is enticing. The lone tree is another nice touch. I'm not so keen on the toning, either, it's a little too green for my taste. But still one of your best, IMO. Regards, Gary

yes, I am still fighting with the layers. as you know, I'm not too comfortable working in RAW, and that can be crucial. I agree about the clouds (though I intentionally increased the contrast), but I don't agree about the man's head .. I wanted it to be completely silhouetted.
I will show you the color of this one. that turned out not too bad, as well. Avi

Thanks Gary. I too, wanted the head to be a complete silhouette, so I don't agree with txules on that. The tone, I dunno why it looks greenish to you (even my other friend Deb said the same), but I did a duotone selecting a yellowish tone and black.. Avi

txules .
{K:49668} 1/9/2009

defintely it's a bit greenish: the silhoutte is always an option that works fine but i find a dis-balance between the light on his back and nape, but i have to admit that blcak color reflects less light, anyway I'm nitpicking and talking technicalities, really nothing important a very fine image a always....jd

no no no, it's important.. as you know I'm in search of good b/w conversion techniques.. still a long way to go I guess.. but the toning bothers me.. why do I see yellow when you guys see green ? the different calibrations of monitors around the world is another pain (dunno if that is the cause here, but many times it is !).. Thanks Saad. The Maasai do not really own Africa, (there are many other tribes) but they are very prominent in these parts of East Africa. You should go there some time, if possible.. it's an amazing experience. best, Avi

You did it again, ey? Making a Hitchcock out of somebody that didn't have the less clue about what you were doing! Of course you know which scene and which film I am thinking of, as I wait for the biplane to appear? ;-)
Composition and lighting are simply fantastic, strong, defining! It is empty and at the same time full! Especially those clouds make such a tension against the darker leading presence of the road.
I think, for such an image I alread said too much! It's for just looking and keeping my moth shut. (Except for drinking the next one to you, that is!)
Cheeers!

Ha ha. so it did remind you of N/NW.. now you say it, I can relate to it as well. :)
well, right now I am in a bit of a spot.. my hard disk crashed on Friday night (all my data AND photos were there... NO backup !!!) .. after a lot of fight and discussions, found a data recovery s/w yesterday.. trying to recover some of my data today. keep your fingers crossed.
till then, enjoy the drink.. and wait till I'm done so that I can join you ! Avi

Of course it is N/NW but in the new version by Avi that soon will be played in all cimenas! ;-)
And of course I cross my finders and my toes and even my hair for you to get back your data again! I know what it feels like since I had exactly the same adventure last summer. And of course also... no backup.
But be sure that there will be a way to get them back. Nowadays they are able to restore data even from burned discs.
Cheers to you, and to successfull data recovery, Avi!
