I think if the background was black it would be nicer.

Actually, the background is black. If you are viewing it on a Mac, or do not have your monitor set for a gamma of 2.2 it may look to be lighter.

You can go here http://www.pwcphoto.com/Calibration.htm to check what the gamma is set to on your system if you wish, would, be curious to know.
