Just my two cents worth, Mike. First I like the overall feeling of the walker looking out to the ocean and his dogs frolicking in the surf. The shot was apparently taken midday and that is always difficult. If you look through usefilm at all the photos people loved, they are usually early morning or late afternoon when the sun's light helps improve the overall look and mood. You might try these times for your next photo forays. Secondly, your vantage point does nothing to help accentuate the feel of the surf. If you shot from the beach, the waves would surely look grander and might give the scene more feeling. Lastly, I am not sure how to do it, the subject (s) are spaced all over the frame. There is nothing to guide your eye, no definite direction or definite central theme. I think someone said if your photos don't look good you aren't close enough. I think you should try isolating your subject. You can try cropping this shot tighter on the walker and see if you like it better.
Again, it's all about how you feel, not what other people say about your photo. Just keep shooting, keep trying different points of view and you will definitely improve.

Bill, thanks so much for the comments. It is just what I want to hear here. Even I can not go back that place to take the same scene again, Now I understand why selecting a good time to take pic is so important.
