Lucas,
This shot is basically a good one but it needs light. The dark part coupled with the very light side fooled the meter in the camera and gave you this. Three things you could do here:
1. Use fill flash to help light the whole scene. Built in flash on the camera would not be enough. 2. Use a reflector to direct natural light onto the darker part. 3. Meter on the darker side of the shot and then when you scan the image adjust the brighter part to match the other side.

Chris, Thank you for the insightful suggestions. I wish I knew what that all meant!!! haha. I'm just a novice photographer. Actually, I took this picture with a point and shoot digital camera (kodak, forgot model) and I was in uniform also, so I didn't have the luxury of some of those things you suggested. I'll have to search the forums or something to figure out what a fill flash is (sad I know hahah). I could try brightening it a bit in photoshop.... Thank you again for your time with such a good piece of feedback! Regards, ~Luke

Luke- I read you Question about fill flash. All you have to do is turn the flash on, not auto the camera will think in daylight that a flash is not needed. Keep shooting and good luck in the service, you guys are all heros to us! S.K.
