Of the 2 images I prefer this one. Both are difficult to understand, but I don't think that is your fault. I think the design and construction of these "things" make it difficult to grasp.

I like your choice of B&W for this composition. The clouds are nice, but you don't mention using a polarizer. That might add a little more "drama" to the image. Still, I like it very much.

I don't know if this will make any sense too you but this reminds me of windmill fields - something about the shape, tone, and repetition.

If I were there, I think I would have looked for a stronger perspective line (if it were possible).

I also wonder about Harlan's suggestion for a filter. It may have increased the contrasts in the water.
