About Taro is used to make poi, a very popular Hawaiian food. Can be very tasty or very bland....depends how it is used. There is a higher view of this already in my portfolio...(Hanalei Valley) However, I like the feel of getting down low here and capturing a more intimate view you might say. Your opinions and comments are always appreciated!

Ok, now you've killed me. What is this beauty, my friend? So special that it is hard to comment. Fantastic green triangular. Very fine details on water and everywhere. Dof, lighting, you name it. Pity that I only have 7. Marilia

Hi, Vincent. They usually tell you to place the horizon line at the top or bottom third of the frame, but I think this shot is an example of how the rules can occasionally be broken with success. The horizon line works very well halfway. The colors are very saturated, and just enough of the sky is included to completely see the clouds. It does seem, however, that the lines of the plants that lead to the center are just slightly off, as if there is not as much that we see trailing away on the right as on the left. Otherwise, great shot.

Wonderful landscape with stunning colors! Great choice of the composition and perspective. Only, I don't like the cropped plant at bottom side. Regards, Giorgio

Top photo... the composition, with the beautiful triangle, and distant mountains, very interesting - for us, far away - subject, beautiful colours... Pleasure to look at. Amazing first impressions, those bright green stems in the water...

I want go back to Maui again it has been quite a few years since I have been there. Excellent image like the contrast great angle and composition.

GP Merfeld   {K:15366} 7/1/2003
Absolutely, stunningly, unadulterated, blissful, scenic perfection. You've nailed this in such a creative manner, Vincent, with your angle and your incredible triangular composition. The rest is your usual brilliant stuff - color, detail, a chorus of "Bali High" playing in the background... ;-)... Don't ever doubt that you are one of the finest scenic photographers in the Islands, guy. Mahalo a nui loa for that...

Deb Mayes   {K:19605} 7/1/2003
Wonderful colors, composition, and detail, and I have to agree - I prefer this view to the other.

David Goldfarb   {K:7611} 7/8/2003
I love the triangular composition here.

The horizon line seems to be leaning just a tad. I usually carry a level with me for landscapes, and there are also levels you can mount in a flash shoe. Of course it can also be fixed after the fact in Photoshop or the old fashioned by rotating the enlarging easel.

The clouds are nice and strong, but it would have been nice to have had some of them in the upper right corner. If the wind is blowing in the right direction, I'll usually try to wait for them to make the right composition.

Seeing the triangle, though--that's the thing that really works here.

I've never seen a taro plant before . . . how interesting! Did you get your feet wet taking this shot?

I too, would have liked this photo panned slightly more to the right just so the field's triangle would be a bit more symmetrical (but then again, I've got a thing for symmetry). I'm also wondering what a shot would look like if the camera were closer to the plants and elevated about 1-2 feet higher. It might have given the plants in the midground a bit more definition.

Still, the sharpness and the colour are fantastic, as always. This photo is very close to being poifect. (Sorry . . . couldn't resist.)

there is a great emotional appeal to this for anyone that has been to the islands...the detail, the perspective, the mountains with the clouds and the Taro...all speaks of the land ...very beautiful and very enjoyed

PS...not necessary to critique back...I am just enjoying the images!

Jim Goldstein   {K:21230} 7/28/2004
Stunning color! I'd love to see this with better symmetry. The Taro has been planted in a pattern. Orientating that pattern in your image might add to the depth and help pull the viewers eye into the image better. I'm also bothered by the one leaf that gets cut off at the bottom of the image. Granted a manicured image would be odd, but I think there might be ways to improve the impact of your image. The color alone is incredible.

Vincent K. Tylor   {K:8848} 8/2/2004
Thanks for taking the time to share your opinions on this. Actually this image here was chosen over many others because I like the symmetry exactly as you see it. I do concur regards the lone stem in front. I will soon be editing another close-up version that does not have this problem. I do appreciate the feedback. This is how we can all learn! Aloha.
