I've also tried this (Nikon 5700 and Nikkor 50 mm), but never got such well focused eyes.

beautiful shot Stephen.. you indeed know what to do. I did try 50mm in reverse on my Coolpix 4500 and gave it back for now, as my Coolpix 4500 has very good built in macro. The fly you took must have been pretty good in size. Here in Southern California the biggest fly i came across was only 1cm or less. I posted one dead fly here but not with the 50mm lens in reverse. You may want to look up the following gentlemen who do bugs: Mark Plonsky, Richard Flake both of them here on Usefilm and live in Midwest. And you will be fascinated by David Sweetland's profile. He lives in Thailand and posts the most exotic bugs you can ever find. He uses Coolpix 4500 without any macro lens setup. What is amazing about your shot, is you did it with 1/15 second. He must have been really still.. very good shot. 7/7

Thank you to everyone for taking the time to comment.
To: Felipe Rodríguez - I got the eyes in focus by pressing the shutter button down halfway to lock the focus, then I moved the camera backwards and forwards until the eyes looked sharp on my LCD viewfinder. It's quite tricky, but I just took lots of shots whilst remaining as still as possible, and I got a few shots that were just right.
To: Subha Pindiproli - you're right, the fly was quite large, about 1cm long. Thanks for letting me know about those other people who take bug shots. I have been especially inspired by Mark Plonsky, and I have combed through his excellent website for help, and he has been very good in giving me advice via email. I got this close to the fly by laying on the floor and resting my hands and arms on the grass - this enabled me to remain still enough to take the shot in the dull light that was available.
To: Elangovan S - yes, I hand held the shot. It wasn't too bad though, because I was laying and resting on the grass, so I could remain quite still - a lot stiller than I can normally manage!  )
To: Joe McCary - as long as I move towards the fly very slowly, it will normally sit there quite still for me. I wish ants were the same, but they never stop moving!
To: Elangovan S - thanks for the comments, I got a lot of help from Mark Plonsky - he has an excellent website which you might like: http://www.mplonsky.com/photo/article.htm If you see his work, then you will see what real quaility is!

To Elangovan and Geza: I know Mark Plonsky is a member of usefilm, but I'm not sure if he updates his portfolio here much anymore. But he keeps it up to date on Photosig, I'm not sure if any of you are members of that website too? If so, let me know and I'll take a look at your work on there too.
