About I took this photo a hour ago in my garden. To get this close, I used my 52mm lensmate adaptor, and I then hand-held the 50mm lens at the end of this in the reverse position. It was quite tricky to take the photo because as I got closer to the fly, I kept having to move my body around because my shadow was falling over it and scaring it away. But I got several images in the end. The details in the eyes are really good in the original 5 megapixel image. I have cropped this image very slightly on the right hand side.

steve this is not a bad picture & i understand the difficulty involved but it is a shame that the wings are not as sharp as they could have been.
Regards
Steve

beautiful image but the sharpness?you may look Chiapas.

Same comment as Steve Bottom

I actually disagree with comments about not enough sharpness, I think this is fantastic! That the wings are not sharp is not important for me, it's the face and eyes that is important I think. I really like this shot and I bet you can play around with composition a lot and make many different photos of just this one. For an example you could crop a bit on top and left and have it as a standing up shot. Then DOF will look different too.

Thank you to everyone for your comments.

To Steve Bottom and Ferdinando Mondino: I know, it's a shame that the whole picture isn't really sharp, but that's the way it is with these close-up macro shots - the depth of field is only a few millimetres, so there's not much else I can do. Other people will normally crop the image so that only the sharpest bits are in the shot, but I liked the full-on picture of this fly so left it as it is. Let me know if either of you have tips for increasing the depth of field in extreme macro shots, as any helpful advice would be appreciated.

To Kristina: Thank you for your suggestions, I will try cropping the image tighter next time so that only the sharpest parts are in shot. I've since noticed that this is what other people who take similar shots do, so thank you for the tip! )

Thanks,

Stephen
