About I saw a tutorial on the Internet called "Crystal Craze" which offered a step-by- step receipe for making glowing crystals in Photoshop. The basic idea was to start with a shaped selection and apply a gradient fill. Then copy the selection, make a second fill using lighter hues and apply a gaussian blur. Finally, you gave the the first image a 3D look with the bevel and emboss filters and blended the two layers with the screen mode to get a glow. Except I never got as fall as the bevel and emboss part. Instead this abstract cityscape began to emerge, first in my imagination, and then on the screen. It was shortly after 911 and I guess it's pretty obvious what was on my mind. The water was added with the Flaming Pear Flood Filter. The Statue of Liberty silhouette I took during a Circle Line cruise. Someday I'd like to do this over in earth tones with a real gritty, grainy cubist look. Someday. Comments are appreciated.

This is a wonderful tribute image Jim. The technique is very interesting, and it all comes together in an excellent image. Your thoughts on the earth tone version sounds very cool, I'd think a very different and compelling image would result.
