About I drive by this area every day coming home from work. So, when the light is good and the timing is right, I pull over and take pictures. Here is one of them! ADDENDUM: Ok, I was out of pocket for a couple of days and come back to see the attention this photo created! To clarify my enhancements in PS: the sun was off to the right and not in my desired view (to include those cool clouds leftover from hurricane claudette). So I "burned" one in behind the entrance structure (using air brush or dodging, brightness adjustments and blurring). Now that I look at it closer, it's a little bit sloppy near the archway and the light should have been carried more to the right. Other color changes included selective burning, saturation and adding more yellow to color balance to warm it up. That's as much as I can remember. The fence is not pasted in, it was left where it was -- my DOF could have been better on that too. Thanks to all for looking and commenting! P.S. Look at my photo called "Cedar Fence" to see this same scene taken during the morning in early spring. You'll see this fence from a bit of a different angle and with different light.

Congratulations, Carol, on POTD. i don?t like these photos as to me they tend to look alike, but i am trying to understand their appeal so i am really starting to look at them to learn from them, to appreciate their massive appeal. My first thought was the arches seem a bit tilted to the right while the fence is straight. Maybe my imagination? Sometimes i have been confronted with the decision to straighten one element of the photo which left another crooked. Usually this occured with sloping ground or a water scene. Not sure if you were dealing with this but my eye went first to the arches and said, ut-oh, crooked!

Your composition is lovely. i especially like the three trees, the clouds and the soft texture of the grass. One can tell that this is a favorite scene for you and that you know it well. You have spent a lot of time considering all the angles of this environment and your familiarity has been the thing that has made this a successful photo. Sure the hypersaturation of the colors grabs the views, but the taste for this genre will run its course and it will be only the exemplary images will be remembered.

i suppose what makes these photos so beloved is our instinctive fondness for the softer colors of the day that appear so transiently at dusk. Work is over, the night stretches dreamily ahead of us and here?s these wonderful clors and light all around us. Also, stormy weather often brings this light and these saturated tones. However, and i think the danger remains, that after being exposed to these hyper-manipulated images, we want more, more, more. More color, more sky, more drama, more fantasy. Someone else shooting this scene, doing MINOR adjustment tweaking to levels, curves, color, remaining true to the integrity of the scene would have received far fewer than 53 comments. Just being thoughtful here, curious about how the scene looked without all the PS work, but that?s just me. You were forthright in your own assessment of the photo?s weaknesses, which is admirable.

best regards: kat-

I see that it takes Photoshop additions yto make a great shot. Nice effect. Comments..the lighting on the fence comes from the side and same effect with the grass. The long strokes of light in the grass tells me the light is coming from the right hand side. This does not seem to fit with backlighting in my opinion. But nice effect though.

Beautiful picture, you chose a fantastic angle to shoot it! I like the warm light, as much as the light reflection and detail on the fence... Must be a pleasure to go to work along this road... :-))

Oooh I dunno Carol, I think you're trying to pull a swifty on us. Even as a composite it still is a remarkable image but I don't know how you could possibly get light from so many sources. Tis a lovely scene regardless and I love the extra saturation.

Carol, I think you did a little more than just color adjustment in PS! A very aesthetic scene, beautifully sculptured, but impossible!
I'm as curious as Derek to know exactly how many photos are incuded in this montage. I noticed too, the shadows from the right indicating another sun, plus the fact that no detail should be visible in the structure which would be silhouetted against the apparant sunset.
I think it might be fair to change your discription to here are several of them!

Hi Carol, I like this one, the fence does really lead your eye into the picture, I believe it's original and not pasted in, the lighting is very lovely. You have done a great job with PS in enhancing this image, although I'm sure it was lovely before, the subject matter is amazing, I love the building, it's like a temple of some kind. The sky is one to die for, it's simply fantastic. A great image, best regards - Richard.

Carol:This is a beautiful scene...but I have a question on the fence on the foreground - is that fence pasted onto the other photo? With it more or less all out of focus slightly, and the fact that the lighting on that once fence indicates to me another sun ;) I would have to say, that maybe you pasted that fence in? Iether way, a lovely scene. I like the low sun..hmm...ok, I think now that there are 3 photos...looking at the sun/shadows on the field, indicates that the 'other sun' that lit up the foreground fence, well - that lighting isn't comming from that sky!Interesting...I'm very curious now...you will have to let me know!

I think that this is a marvellous image that has been crafted beautifully. I know the fence is out of focus...but that is as it should be..its purpose is to help lead you into the picture...the colours are wonderful and impart a warmth to the scene that is almost magical and the trees lend a sense of scale that allows one to realise the size of the focus of attention. So, well done, a fantastic picture that you can be proud of...regards, Brian

Carol - I don't know anything about the camera you use - does it allow you to set the aperture? If so, you might want to use hyperfocal distance focusing. If you do, it might be possible to have the entire fence in focus - that's the only minor criticism I have with this beautiful image. Well done - Bob T.

Thanks for the truth "color enhancements in P.S." comment as so many photographers are not truthfull at all about this. I like it regardless as I think your composition makes the shot a winner. those clouds are fantastic as well but I like the fence the best and how your eyes follow it all the way deep into the picture!
