Incredible, striking image. You've also left me with an old doo-wop song in my head which will probably drive me crazy in the middle of the night, but is a magnificent juxtaposition for your image. Cheers!

Wonderful effect and detailing Jim, glowing with fire but it looks like it could be molten amber, can amber be molten?

Jim, you have a supremely, wonderfully ironic way of framing the eternal question. I love the work you did on this. Its got so much omen to it, that I can't help but laugh (nervously) as I read the title. I really like it.

didn't they cut open the breasts of their victims tearing out the bleeding hearts at some offerings to the sun god our good old aztecs? : fine way to pose the question :)

Sincere thanks to everyone who commented on this image.
As it happened, the Aztec calendar was among the earliest images that I attempted to incorporate into a layered PS photoillustration more than a decade ago. I've had a fascination with with Aztec and Mayan symbolism for as long as I can recall.
This particular Aztec calendar was among the first objects I photographed with my first digital camera, the Nikon 990, in May 2000. At the time, I tried to work it into a successful photo illustration, but was frustrated by the PS devils. My ambitions were clearly ahead of my PS abilities.
When I revisited the file yesterday, I was able to work straight through without a glitch to achieve something that actually well beyond my concept and expectations of three years ago. It's a small landmark, but your comments have brought me special satisfaction. Thanks. -Jim

Jim,
I want to leave this with one comment:
What fun but then I thought - those funny Aztek faces remind me of aliens now - I am not sure did you stretch them or is it just the glowing eyes? What was your light source for the eyes?

As a lover of ancient Mexican cultures, this photo really grabbed my attention. Looks like something you would see near one of the sacrificial sites at one of the pyramids in Mexico! I love what you did with the warped reflection and the way you carried the glowing eyes downward to pull the viewer all the way through from top to bottom. BTW, where in Mexico are you going?

Another really cool alien looking creation. The PS work is amazing, and I have a hard time getting past being amazed at this point. The colors, composition, textures, and blending are all expertly done. There is sort of a "smiley face" in the right eye of the left creature;>). Excellent art work.

Hi Craig:
Now that you mention it, that could be a smiley face -- although it's pure coincidence. To get the glow in the eyes I applied a yellow layer to the background with a blend mode. Then, I used a circular brush and the liquify filter to create the suggestion of a cornea, which is how the smily face must have come about.

Fantastic image Jim. I come back to this again and again. You capture a great deal of the Magic of Latin America. And the title is ...yes we have to be at war with the obvious...in these days! Wonderful work.
