About Early up while the rest of the family slept in. I used a Cokin sunset 1 on the sky only. Tweaked in photoshop, but what is here is basically what I saw. Your thoughts and comments are always appreciated!

Dear Vincent, i'm on an internet cafe and i didn't want to login the UseFilm from a common computer.. 3 or 4 minutes ago i just wanted to look recent photographs at usefilm and i saw your image.. so i couldn't stop myself and i logged in :)

This is a great scene.. Colors and perspective is amazing.. The surface of the sea, the reflection of the sunset from sea.. Unbelievable work.. Splendid.. Don't mind the ratings.. Just read the comments my friend, this image has a very deep emotional power..

Regards, Murat.

Superb! Those early mornings really do pay off eh?! This is crystal clear, the lighting just right and the sea was flat enough to record light reflection but not too much other detail. I've attempted a few similar shots of a different place but so far haven't been able to meter it properly. Great shot, well done.

Maja Gligoric   {K:13402} 8/2/2003

Truly a beautiful scene. Gorgeous - wish I had been there. Good morning outing. Top scores - this is beautiful. Composition is wonderful, also.

Pete Pantsari   {K:4196} 8/2/2003
Magnificant sunrise and an excellent composition. It's very interesting and almost unreal. Very fine work. Regards.

Leslie Cohelan   {K:20887} 8/2/2003
I saw this earlier and opted to pass it because there was something i could not put my finger on...while the composition and the still water and the early morning light are all beautiful, something is off, IMO...I think it is a bit too much blur on the lights...not a lot...but enough to disturb the sharpness on the upload...it's just not quite as crisp as your other images...excellent composition and colors...and thanks for allowing me the tour...now did I miss one of Kuai?

T Glow   {K:14955} 8/2/2003
to talk about crop is very easy.... as well as here it was able very well to eliminate part on the left side. But when we set up the image... has meaning him we left... and it is not cutting that a good image is defined. Colors & setting very good here.

Abeer Al Jarsh   {K:10209} 8/2/2003
excellent shot
the sky is amazing
well done

Carol Watson   {K:5185} 8/2/2003
Great shot Vincent! I like what the sunset filter does to a sunrise sky!! Interesting effect but seems to fit with the other warm yellow lighting along the beach. I have started my "my spirit is calling me back to Hawaii" whine with my husband again and it's all your fault.... :-)

Elangovan S   {K:10675} 8/3/2003
At least I want to say something... Hey - You have no horizon on this picture... :-) Russel would have loved to tease on that.. (BTW, where are you Russel... Hope things are fine with you).

The colors are unbelievable. You mentioned the Cokin sunset filter on the sky only... Could you please elobarate on that... Is it a graduated filter or...?

Beautiful beautiful beautiful...

Elangs.

Marleen den Brok   {K:374} 8/3/2003
Lovely colors and a great view.

Vincent K. Tylor   {K:8812} 8/4/2003
Thanks for all of your opinions and comments. Yes Elangs, the Cokin sunset is a graduated filter. I just used it in the sky only. Trust me, even on the original, I cannot tell there is a filter used. Sharpness Leslie is really near perfect on the original and print. (I of course did use a tripod). I personally think this is still quite sharp, but, there is nevertheless a noticeable change through the j-peg compression. Thanks for sharing. And thanks again to all that stopped by. A big Aloha!

Elangovan S   {K:10675} 8/4/2003
Thats very interesting technique, Vince. OK, maybe if we do a little math here with what you say and what Lesslie says... I dont know if she says in general or the lights in certain portion of the picture.

The lights on the left side buildings have a little streak going upwards, could that be caused by the filter... just wondering?

However, this is a gorgeous picutre...

Elangs.

Hey, Vince, another recognizable "Tylor" Hawaiian landscape. I've never been there, 'cause I'm afraid my northern blood might boil. How do you calculate exposure on an image like this? I like the space in the lower right corner, highlighting the signature. It's a professional touch, not something we amateurs would even think of. By the way, have you come across a Minolta 5400 that will initialize yet? What are your thoughts so far?

Vincent K. Tylor   {K:8812} 8/4/2003
Thanks guys. The streaks going up are basically from being slightly overexposed. I have found that with these cityscape shots, they seem to have a greater impact when I bracket +.3. The +.7 is a bit too bright and 0.0 a tad dark. Even though some parts may be slightly overexposed, the overall impact is far greater than without. Basically Dave, my F-5 is pretty fool-proof for most scenes anywhere, so why mess with it at all! (almost anywhere)....

The Dimage Elite 5400 is here and I have indeed spent many hours on it comparing. While it is simply not as good as the hi-res lab scanning, it is very close and simply an outstanding scanner. I will update the old threads soon and even start a new one. Thanks for asking and stopping by again. Aloha

Very nice work Vincent.

LaMaro Hall   {K:3377} 2/17/2004
Vince, I know of you. I see alot of your photos around town and the Military Exchanges. I am trying my damnest to reach the level of full time. Nothing is more better than doing something you love. Anyway I like your work and so does my spouse....

Alvaro Ennes   {K:2605} 2/28/2004
Ótima noturna....Parabéns.

Jim Goldstein   {K:21230} 7/28/2004
Stunning shot! I'm surprised you don't use Kodak VS for these shots versus Velvia. My understanding and experience is that VS pops orange/reds better and Velvia pops blue/greens better.

Vincent K. Tylor   {K:8812} 8/2/2004
It is true that Kodak is good with reds/yellows and Velvia with Blues and greens. However, Velvia is still better at both reds and yellows than Kodak in my honest opinion. Plus usually the reds are often already filled with plenty of saturation as it is. I also appreciate the extra contrast that Velvia brings to the table. I have compared extensively here. To me Fuji Velvia 50 is also quite a bit better than 100...this after many side by side tests. Only for wildlife do I choose the Velvia 100 nowadays....and a few sunsets. Thanks for your input. Is always appreciated.
