I like the one penguin is looking at the viewer, and the disproportionate limbs and odd-fitting tuxedos. They really look like they squeezed into their outfits further enhancing the sense that they are shams. Visually, the highlight lead me a little all over the frame.

Jim, Jim, Jim...amazing stuff! The penguins are funny and endearing but the tunnel(?) they are in is fantastical (Is that a word? It is now!). I especially like the penguin on the right because his sleeve is too long making him look vulnerable. The other one has that confident, devil-may-care attitude of one who thinks he knows all about women and must enlighten his companion. What a pair! :) Really astounding!

Hi Peta:
The background is the arcade at Place des Voges in Paris. During the day it's filled with cafe tables and tourists. However, I found while rollerblading through it early one morning in late June that not only is the arcade a great place to skate before the crowds arrive, but the light is pretty good for photos as well.

While working on this I was mainly listening to Cold Play -- especially live and studio versions of "Yellow" -- and Fountains of Wayne doing, among others, "I Want an Alien for Christmas" and "Stacey's Mom Has Got It Going On."

Hello Maciek:
Your advice, as usual, is prescient -- revised file attached.
In V1 the figures were actually better integrated with softer edges. But by V3 I had built up many multiple layers in different modes and the softening became obliterated. Re-softening has been applied. I tried selective applications of film grain, diffusion and a couple of other things, but in the end, the blur tool turned the trick.
As for the background. It bothered me significantly that the figures weren't adequately set off from the arcade, but I think I was too in love the background effect to do the obvious layer masking. Your critique solved that. In the end I used a combination of layer making and a bit of render>lighting effects>spotlight to give the tuxedoed dudes better separation.
My deep thanks for your ideas. See what you think of the results. --Jim

Now then, Jim, be honest with me! Were they really discussing the metaphysics of female geometry, because frankly, if they weren't, it rather destroys the whole worth of the picture from a metaphysical point of view! And who'd be an animal keeper anywhere, let alone at the aquarium in Boston?! Get stuck with a job like that and you're bound to get asked all sorts of stupid questions ~ like: "How old is this fossil of a dodecasaurus's back-bone?" "Er, well, it's got to be 2 million and 3 years old, cause it was 2 million years old when I started working here and I've been here 3 years last Tuesday!"
See what these pictures of yours are doing to me?! I'm seeing blue cellos in my sleep, pictures of the Manhattan skyline goin' crazy as I'm trying to focus on reading my latest copy of Digital Photo magazine!! In fact, I've even started sending flowers to my camera! I'm just gonna give you a string of 7's and hope that helps me return to some kind of sanity!

Chris Spracklen's comment above made me laugh out loud - he said something I totally agree with - your creative pictures are also making me see blues, reds, squares in the wrong places of my everyday life!
As for these two strange human-looking-thingies in Tuxs......I'll never look at a man in a tuxedoe the same way again.

Thanks everyone for the comments.
It seems we are frequently anthropomorphizing animals by attributing them human emotions and even human motives. I thought it would be an interesting theme for a photo illustration.
I'm a frequent guest at the Amateur Comedy Club in NYC (thanks, Shelley!) where tuxedoes are required at weekend performances. Earlier in the summer I looked around at audience members, myself included, all stuffed into ill-fitting tux jackets that have been in closets for decades and thought" "My, god! These guys really do look like penguins." --Jim

Surreal seams to be the word of the day ... I think I will go with different, new ,fresh intresting ,humorous even the title hints at your sence of humor ... I love the warm tones of the tunnel ( stunning by the way ) and the cool tones of the Penginsmakes for great contrast .... just all around an intresting piece of art .... You get an A+ from me but then again you always do .

Hmmm... I think the idea is excellent and I like much the treatment on the background but I have to agree with Mary... And even though I know you'll probably have to take another bazillion pictures just to have one or two that fits perfectly for each of them, you definitely should rework the heads... Have you tried with some other species btw ?
Aaargh... So demanding !
