I think he's actually asking for food! I had one of these guys come up to me from 30 feet. I was at 20 feet, and to see this long eel swim up to me to beg for food was very frightening, until they told me it was tame and likes to beg. You've captured a lot in the eyes. It all goes out from there.

I remember in 1984, off the coast of Catalina Island, I managed to go 98 feet. Not much to see, just giant kelp fronds, but the beauty was no lesser, just different.
