About Thanks, everyone, for the comments and suggestions on "Great Bird." The silhouette, incidentally is a frigate bird. Whenever fishing boats land on the beaches facing the Banderas Bay in Jalisco, Mexico, these giant birds with wingspans of up to six feet -- along with the equally large albatross -- circle overhead. Even with a CP 5700, it's relatively easy to get some good shots.
// If today's composite looks familar, that's because it is. These are the same images that appear in "Morning Song." After looking at it for a couple of days, I decided I could do better. The composition, especially, seemed awkward. So it's been rebuilt from the ground up. As always, I'm grateful for any opinions, comments or suggestions.

Interesting and very unusual. However, I find it all a little too much at once.

Kristina Kohut   {K:49990} 10/2/2003
Fantastic work! Absolutely terrific! I love the way you composed the clock in the background, also the dolphins are so sweet! And this toning is wonderful!

Lexie Summers   {K:2027} 10/2/2003
This is definitely an improvement over the original. The addition of the horizon line creates a nice ground (or water in this case) and sky effect. My only complaint is that it cuts the image perfectly in half. But that is not to distracting. The other nice effect the horizon has for me is that it creates a feeling of the clock being the setting sun. Like time is dissapearing. Lastly, The more muted blue creates a better calming and relaxing feeling that the dolphins really accentuate.

For a quick moment, I wondered where the man in the corner had disappeared to! But I found him so all is well.
Enjoying this Time series Jim.

Call me sentimental if you like, but I wanted to bring up my 5000th Karma point by commenting on one of UF friend's pictures ~ this is it! I thought 'Morning Song' was pretty decent, Jim, but you're right! This one's even better! I particularly like the way you've positioned the clockface and dolphins. One day I'm going to have a crack at a montage, but with guys like you around i think it'll be a while before anyone gets a look at one!!
Excellent work as ever.
Best regards, Chris.

Did Audrey take the man with her!? It's like find Waldo...where is he? ;)
I like this version very much too, the jumping dolphins I prefer in this I think. Don't have them side by side to compare. I love how the background almost sparkles as it would with sunlight catching the water movement.

WOW

Dawn has a much lighter feel to it than Midnight did. The dolphins are a nice touch especially given the blue tones of the whole piece. Very nice series you have going here even if I do still think you're doing more drugs than you let on.

Transcental. Magical. Your work lifts me up, inspires me, and makes me want to improve mine.

Inspirational. Emotional. Creative. Original. Dammit, they Rock. Looking for adequate words to describe my appreciation of your images...

Craig Garland   {K:27077} 10/2/2003
I agree Jim. This one is more aesthetically pleasing-- there's a balance, a rhythm, and harmony to the composition that some of the others lacked in comparison. And I must say that while I'm not really a big fan of the blue themes of some of your previous images, I really like it for this one. Maybe it's the dolphins and general marine theme that says OK to blue for me. Personally, I think this is at or near your best in this series, and is one I'd hang on a wall. Nice work and Cheers. Craig

Jim; thanks for taking the time and interest to do an alternate cropping of my Beachcomber Boy pic. I like it-- in fact I tried it-- and some other croppings too, and that may well end up as my final print. But for a UF upload, I felt that particular cropping dissociated the boy too much from the ocean proper, so I went with what you saw. I also used to shoot high contrast scenes w/K64 and yellow, orange, and red filters too-- aah for the good ol' days.

I've really enjoyed especially your "Time" series of photos, as well as watching you develop the "squarist" technique, and I see they've both done very well here on UF-- cool and inspiring works. Cheers. Craig
