Darn, forgot to sharpen. It is meant to be a bit soft and dreamy tho. But here is a sharpen version for you.

Allison Kuznia   {K:562} 10/2/2003
Nice photograph. Has a very dreamy quality to it. I think I might like the unsharpened (original) version better. It's hard to say. Very nice either way.

Excellent capture as always Louise. I love your style of photography. Great children's portraits. Love the toning.

Robert Whiteman   {K:2261} 10/2/2003
I see you've passed through the "blue" phase. Must've been the weather.(?) (Actually it was a nice blue)

On this one I'll take the sharpened version. It doesn't lose the "soft" look but looks more focused. I agree with Karen about the toning. While this does have the look of a family snapshot, it's a very nice one. I think it's the background that gives it this feel for some reason. It's a bit busy and focused enough to command the viewer's attention. The contrast level (in the background) is competing with the main subjects a little more that it should perhaps.

What I would do with this pose, just to be different not better...have big sis look just a little more relaxed (could it be the partially clenched fingers?), then I'd get little sis to hold brother's arm with both hands while leaning her head on his shoulder. Brother would have to lower the book and shift it to the left (his right) so as not to block little sis's face. I might get back a bit more, zoom to a longer focal length and try to get the background a little less focused.

The time of day seems perfect here. Nice sunlight late enough in the day to not require squinting and the shadows haven't gone too deep either.

It's this type of photo/subject that shows the limits of the 640 max jpeg size. I think this would look much better larger. The more I look at it the more I like this idea. A lot of variations can be done with this.

Hard to decide which one I like now, the sharper version seems more documentary while the softer version tells a different story, amazing what a little change can do for an image. Given the lens I'd agree with Robert's suggestion of moving back to take the background more out of focus.

great shot

If I moved back I would be down in the ditch or on the busy street but I agree. Less DOF would have been nice. This was just kind of a 'bonus' after we had done all the other smiley at the camera shots. The idea was to photograph this family infront of their home thus the busy background. Thanks for all comments and suggestions. Very good and constructive critism.

Actually, Louise; I feel that the depth of field is great. I took this scene as a whole and the porch in the background tied the kids together as a family for me. So I liked it very much as is. I probably do prefer the sharpened version, but both actually work for me.

I see what he means about the older girls hands being a bit tense; but I know how difficult it is photographing kids as that is my obsession, especially 3 at a time. Excellent work as always. Nicely composed, toned wonderfully and what a great BONUS shot. Good work.

Wonderful capture, too!!! Yes, with the sharpening it is better; toning and lighting is great, make a lovely atmosphere, perfectly fitting to this scene. Regards

Timeless moment here - very lovely!
