About The Ginko leaves are everywhere this year near my former office in Towson, Maryland... and I love their shape, color and texture.

This image is taken straight down looking at a small fountain. The fountain, part of a memorial to Baltimore County residents who died during the Vietnam War, is almost hidden in a garden next to the old Courthouse. I only found the fountain by following its sound.

Hermen Pen   {K:9117} 11/16/2003
Well composed and good detail in the leaves.
Nice colour contrast and reflections, too. Top marks!

In Transit   {K:29394} 11/16/2003
The Ginko is a fine addition to this fountain... as it's leaves are probably originate from the oldest tree in existance... from China

Robin McAulay   {K:8908} 11/16/2003
wow - very nice.. love these reflections

John Barclay   {K:3650} 11/16/2003
Fantastic the way it is... I'd have been tempted to remove the top and bottom leaf leaving three. I'd also have pulled out the bottom couple of small ones to clean this up a bit. All that said it is still a terrific image and well seen! I WANT ONE!

Steve Rosenbach   {K:8348} 11/16/2003
Thanks to all for your comments and kind remarks! John - I tried out your idea, and I think it's a good one - here is the photo with only the middle three large leaves. I like it- Thanks!

Thanks for being receptive to my thoughts Steve. I do like it both ways but feel the three version is much stronger. I'd still like to see some of the smaller leaves in there too. Great work!

Great composition!

Betsy Hern   {K:12872} 11/17/2003
Isn't it amazing what even a 2MP camera can produce in the right hands. This is so much more than a typical photo of fall leaves. First, you've managed to find leaves that are not the usual ones most often associated with Fall. Second, you've captured them in a setting that one might not consider - not in a forest, in a pile of leaves in the front yard, or in the gutter of a house (where most of mine are right now). The details in the veins of the leaves, the water, and the reflections make such rhythmic patterns, almost lyrical. Your composition includes a wonderful variance of the key element, the shape of the gingko repeats itself with just enough difference in size, and subtlety of color (love the bit of green in the middle leaf). And the colors are fantastic. Without realizing it you've captured two colors that are directly opposite each other on the color wheel - yellow and blue - this creates natural tension and vibrancy. All the elements of this image have come together to produce something simple, but very memorable. This would make a wonderful image in a color photography book illustrating all the right things to do.

Steve Rosenbach   {K:8348} 11/19/2003
My sincere thanks to everyone who left comments! To Carolos and Rodrigo... muito obrigado! This photo, by the way, illustrates one of the wonderful benefits of photography. I never really noticed ginko leaves before this fall, and the reason I did finally SEE them this year is because I'm photographing again after so many years. What a blessing that at age [almost] 54, I've been granted awareness of something so beautiful - something I would have just walked right by with barely a glance when I was in "civilian" mode. :-)

Bryan Lim   {K:235} 12/5/2003
very awssome picture mr. R 98th percentile...very impressive

Hanna Segal   {K:13469} 12/22/2003
Excellent. Loved the "construction" work you did with the leaves. Gingko leaves make great shots. The one with three leaves works fine, too.

Clifton Jones   {K:11813} 2/18/2004
Beautiful image....very well done....I like the way you captured the shadows from the tree...great work....Thank you for your wonderful comments....like you..It's nice to be back in the saddle again(smile)..the building you asked about is located behind ground zero...The shot was taken about a year after the World Trade Center tragedy....regards Clifton.........

My Ginko tree will be an adult in just two centuries. Can't wait to see it then :)

Months after you posted it.
But pictures like that lasts forever. Like some Ginkos do.

Steve Rosenbach   {K:8348} 5/17/2004
Thanks to all for your kind comments! I've attached a modified version of this photo, one with all leaves cloned out except for the 3 main large leaves. This was based on a suggestions from John Barclay, and I think it makes for a better photo. I had posted it a long time ago, but the renovation of the website it seems to have gotten lost.

I think the version with three leaves would be a great picture...if infact that was the picture you took! Common dad, stick to the orriginal. If you couldn't do it in our darkroom, don't do it in photoshop! I'm proud of you dad!

Here's a great shot for the latest project. Maybe you should re-post it in the new Patterns In Nature project for it to get another award. Beautiful shot. I love the shape of the leaves and the lovely reflections in the water. The deep blue is stunning and oh yeah....congratulations on giving the featured critique of the day. How else would I have found your super portfolio.

Cheers - Ann :)

Lori Stitt   {K:74568} 12/9/2005
There is something so appealing about this photograph. Colors, textures, composition. Not sure what draws me first into this image.
The shape of these leaves is so unusual, to me anyway, arrangement is fantastic.

This image has a magical quality about it, I like it very much!

Good job, Steve, and congratulations on your much deserved recognition!

Lori :)

Linda Kooper   {K:869} 12/10/2005
Hi Steve:

I, too, have always loved the Ginko, although I have only seen their leaves in pictures. This is a beautiful photo, thank you so much for sharing it.

Thats a pleasing and peaceful image. Funny that such a beautiful image came from such a vicious war. I suppose thats the irony.
