About Montreal, Quebec, August 2003.

This picture was taken with a Certo-phot camera. It was built in West Germany about 40 years ago. The shutter speed is fixed and there's only 2 aperture to choose from (f/8 and f/11). The image was slightly underexposed (at least 2 stops!). The negative was very light and the scanner (an Epson Perfection 3170 Photo) couldn't detect the image. The contrast was increased to reveal the image. This image was influenced by the work of Jeanne Wells, a Usefilm.com member.

Thanks for your comments. Regards, Claude

Hmmm, interesting camera. The only thing I could find out about it is that it shoots 6 x6 (love it), is cheap and simple. Toy camera? Light leaks like a holga? Ooo, I want one. Love this photo, very spooky, I expect to see Vincent Price peeking through the gate. The darkness gives this image a wonderful mood and you've chosen a good subject for the capabilities of the camera. I want to see more.

i love this too! The darkness, the mystery, the subject and the composition...makes me think of New Orleans on a sultry summer night. The lighting is very emotive..thanks for the history of the camera and the technique..best regards: kat~

Thank you for the hat-tip, Claude. This is indeed a wonderful image. Dark & moody -- like the answer to a question we didn't know we had.

Aren't the old cameras and lenses a joy? The really make you stretch your abilities and you intuition, I think. This is a fine job. You can be sure I'll come back to look at more very soon!
