| About |
First attempt in sports photography... Skating is one of my favourite pastimes and last week the Dutch skating championships were held on my 'home rink'. Of course I could not resist to bring my camera :) I enjoyed the tournament but the photographic results were kind of a disappointment... Most images were unsharp. This was one of the best, but the skater is still unsharp :( The main cause was probably the bad light, forcing me to use larger shutter times / apertures than I would have liked. Still, any hints and tips for improvement (viewpoint, focusing, etc.) would be highly appreciated...
By the way - the skater is an Olympic silver medalist, the experts will recognize him :)

Hermen, je beste zei je. In ieder geval nog redelijk goed voor een actie foto. Ik vind het toch nog knap Ik houd mij liever aan wat rustiger foto,s Groet teunis

As you have already said for yourself Hermen the only trouble with this sports action shot is sharpness. Composition is very good and so is the time and point you have captured Bob de Jong. So next time you are going to shoot some speed-skating images hopefully there will be some more light. The talent for these kind of shots you've got already....Best regards Harry

You have done well for the lighting conditions. I think more light would solve the problem but you didn't have much control over that. Don.

Hi Hermen, Looks like you've already gotten some good advice, so I'll only say that I found myself in the same boat as you a while back when I was trying diligently to take gymnastics photos (bad light, no flash, and fast moving athletes!). Lots of photographs later and some better equipment has sure helped me. Shoot, if I'm working with an f-stop that's not f/1.2 to 2.8, I almost don't know what to do anymore! Anyway, great composition, timing, etc. (like Harry said). Best of luck! Dan

herman, i took some football shots awhile back and found that i had best results when using continuous mode. getting five quick shots in succession usually resulted in at least 2 that were decent.
best of luck ~ james
