About Little surreal was my intention... And the light source was also planned to be in the frame. Just so you know... I understand the audience will be split as to the lightsource, but I do not have any plans to win a beauty contest here... ;)

The girl and the composition are lovely. The detail is amazing. I'm not a fan of seeing the light source, although I very much like the smoke in front of it, so I don't know how you'd change it. :)

Nejat Talas   {K:15} 11/17/2002
I don't think I've seen this one before... Cool. I liked this one.

Greg Summers   {K:1115} 11/17/2002
I,like it - everything except the upper left corner - though i have trouble with anything with a cigarette in it - still - it is a romantic image with wonderful colors - there has to be a wa to do this without a cigarette - OK - I'll get off my soap box

Greg Summers   {K:1115} 11/17/2002
I also wanted to say her outfit is funky - so did i miss the point of the cigarette?

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 11/17/2002
Greg, riead my "about" :)

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 11/17/2002
I odn't like cigarettes either. I just quit smoking about a month ago. Now it's pipe only. With good tobaco (if such thing exists...)

Steve Kompier   {K:4528} 11/17/2002
Nice to see you posting again Chris.

I wish people would refrain from judging a photo based on personal bias and comment regarding photographic merits.

I read your "about" and fully understand what you are doing. I love everything about this.

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 11/17/2002
Yes... the hidden voting system will clearly reflect imperfections of it. Many will give low scores and no actual feedback out of pure jealousy. That's why I am happy this site has Editors that pick the best photos without relying on point feedback. It is irrelevant how the photo rates. It is important what it brings to people. Regards.

Dawna G.    {K:7709} 11/17/2002
hi Chris, I enjoy your work and glad to see you posting again. Regarding the ratings, they will not always make sense.
Personally, I think this image is fabulous, of the highest quality in terms of sharpness, composition, tones, lighting, etc etc. (I would rate at a 9 or 10 for sure) :)

Kim Culbert   {K:37013} 11/17/2002
Great textures, and great thick light. Was the cigarette smoke doctored in afterwards, or what was the lighting process on getting it to show up so clearly?

Antonio Díaz   {K:2710} 11/17/2002
i love your style, and of course i love this shot! im glad youre back posting... nice work!

Barry Tipping   {K:959} 11/17/2002
Nice comp and color...welcome back Chris...

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 11/17/2002
Kim, the smoke is closer to the lightsource (the lightbox) it shows more there.

Andrew Lahanas   {K:7044} 11/17/2002
This is the best thing I,ve seen for a long time. Obviously from the equipment you have you are not a tourist happy snapper. The pose, the girl, the outfit mixed with the rough smoking attitude in complete darkness really makes it for me. I love the dark BG. It gives it a old style portrait feel, and it has the texture of an oil painting. I am looking at it and trying to improve it, but I can't. Even the light source in the photo adds to the mystery. Good stuff!

jeff lynch   {K:4770} 11/17/2002
Hats off to ya Chris. Another good one man.

Autumn Ruhe   {K:993} 11/17/2002
nice composition, great style.

Steven B. Poitinger   {K:1757} 11/19/2002
This is great Chris. I like everything about it. The pose, the dress, the cigarette and the inclusion of the light source. I don't know the first thing about studio lighting and I'm wondering how you managed to keep the light so warm and soft with it so close to your model.

al shaikh   {K:15790} 11/19/2002
Quite marvelous.

Mary Sue Hayward   {K:17531} 11/19/2002
Many congrats!! This is wonderful, for the mood as well as the spot on composition.

Bart Aldrich   {K:7614} 11/20/2002
Congratulations! This is so unique... a sort of in-your- face, modern portrait style. Great detail, lighting and concept. Bravo!

Andrew Polushkin   {K:311} 11/25/2002
Magnificent colors! A magnificent composition! I enjoy.

Marc Schultz ARPS   {K:17} 11/28/2002
Chris - Excellent post production digital work on this image to make it appear a bit more like a painting than a photograph. Can you share a bit about any filters or PS treatments that can be used to create this sort of effect?

Chris Whaley   {K:3844} 11/30/2002
no offense Marc but from my understanding Chris didn't use digital...he just knows what he is doing. And I could swear up and down this is Gwyneth Paltrow?

Jay Dixon   {K:563} 12/4/2002
Unique. Bizarre. Great Rendering of the skin.

Danie Saaiman   {K:1002} 1/10/2003

The model is full of sex appeal!
The photographer work well on it.
Regards.

Neil Shapiro   {K:2122} 4/19/2003
Chris, this was my first introduction to your portfolio, and I have to first say that it's quite an wonderful one! You have some incredible portraits--I'll have to visit a comment individually on some. However, I find this particular image to be less powerful, appear more staged and certainly more awkward than the others of yours I've seen. The lighting is quite good. The model's expression and hat don't really work for me in any way; the outstretched arm and cigarette don't either. I look forward to viewing and commenting on your other images; I hope you take my somewhat negative comments on this photo in the honest, constructive feedback manner they are offered. (Looking down at other comments, I may be alone in my views here, but diversity of opinions is indeed the nature of art!)

zosia zija   {K:12006} 5/2/2003

Nick Pernisco   {K:625} 6/19/2003
Great. I love this shot. It's very powerful and thought provoking.. not just a pretty face but depth too.

Harry Eggens   {K:14804} 12/3/2003
Splendid composition. Very clever to leef a piece of the light source in the frame so we all can see how your model and the smook coming of the sigaret is comming from. Lighting and composition is excllent. Great work Chris....Best regards Harry

Ayse Telci   {K:4168} 12/3/2003
greeaat composition and excelllent lighting..

ana ribeiro   {K:21290} 12/3/2003
its ok, good photo, only the white left corner bothers me

Anna    {K:2994} 12/3/2003
Very nice indee. I agree with some others about the left corner... but I really like model, outfit and pose a lot!

B:)liana    {K:30945} 12/3/2003
Congratulations ;-)

Dona Flor   {K:60} 12/3/2003
Very nice!

Gary Gantert   {K:2104} 12/3/2003
The light doesn't bother me.
It turns the photo into a 'set up shot' disspelling any sense that it wasn't posed.
If the light is there to show smoke you would be better served with a spot of raw light aimed right above the hand from behind.
Also I'd like to see some kind of background treatment.
Even subtle light on a background would give more depth.
I just find solid black backgrounds so dull.

Tracey MacFadden   {K:1066} 12/3/2003
i love that dress so much and the model is very beautiful. i like the cigarette in it, the smoke, and how the arm is extended.

Marcos Duarte   {K:15402} 12/3/2003
Linda foto e composiçao.

Parabens

Hans Beckert   {K:45} 12/3/2003
Can't say I really like it so much. The square composition: I almost always dislike this. The yellowish hue is not so flattering to the subject, and her extended arm with a cigarette is not to my taste. Besides, I don't care for smokers. I've made an attempt to correct the yellowishness.

Chris Blaszczyk   {K:610} 12/3/2003
I'd be unhappy if everyone would like this;)

Titia Geertman   {K:5579} 12/3/2003
I like every bit of it. There is so much to see in this photo and I particularly like the way the composition leads my eye from the model along her stretched arm toward the light in het upperleft corner. Just beautiful and congratulations on the Editor's choice.

Titia

P. Christine Skinner   {K:27380} 12/3/2003
This is definitely one of the most creative and beautiful photos I have seen. The detail is pure against the black background. The smoke in the top corner is a great touch. The feminine gown is a wonderful contrast to the cap and cigarette. I am duly impressed.

Erland Pillegaard   {K:29777} 12/3/2003
I love it,it is so wonderful

eden tsukahira   {K:6} 12/14/2003
I love it, and you all really should get over the ciggarette thing- what does that have to do with the beauty of the picture?

Sandra Bozic   {K:3963} 1/10/2004
....another doll

john amore   {K:14015} 1/13/2004

Ivan Jimenez   {K:9098} 9/10/2004
The more Hasselblad pictures I see the more I realise I need one!!!
You have done a great job, lightsource or not lightsource!

Giuliano Guarnieri   {K:35526} 10/5/2004
Hello Chris,
to be honest this image doesn't like to me very much.
That light on the top left disturb me a little bit.
In this period where the people use PS also to do a coffee ;-) , I think that it was 10 minutes of time to hide it.

BTW, the effect of the light on the model is very nice
Bye
Giuliano

Sam Smith-Palomeque   {K:1680} 12/7/2004
Amazing fashion pic

Sam Smith-Palomeque   {K:1680} 12/19/2004
Great fashion shot, glamour or something like that. Great comp and love the dark background, and the fact she's not looking in any particular direction, just kind of daydreaming. And her arm randomly out in the air look great across the black. Lovely lighting and tones.
Love this
ps. not sure if ive already commented though...

Girish Chonkar   {K:7043} 4/15/2005
Beautiful picture. very strong appeal.

Hakan AKIRMAK   {K:16337} 6/28/2005
Absolutely excellent work Chris! Congratulations for this wonderful photo!

Marty Goss   {K:2} 10/8/2005
Wowwwww... LOVELY!!! I would've ditched the hat, and had her smoking in a bridal gown instead... just to give a healthy black eye to convention! :-P Keep up the good work!

Inanc Tekguc   {K:862} 11/2/2005
i like the cigarette here, although i don't like its existence in real world... the smoke in front of the light source is interesting. one thing i don't like about the image, is her expression, though i can't really explain what it is that bothers me :)
