The woman in the back is not defined, blurred and overexposed. Great ! It makes her enigmatic and the picture starts to tell a strory. What is she reaching for... How are the two tied ? Is the one in front aware of the presence of her phantomatic counterpart ?

This must be the first time I've heard 'not defined, blurred and overexposed' summed up as 'great' :-) I have to dissapoint you though, because on the print she's merely overexposed. You can make out some facial features, and she appears to be looking at a shop receipt. Hope I haven't killed all the mystery by telling you this!

Hi Matej, I like the fact that eye first focusses on the woman in front, then follows the alley into the distance, meeting another figure. The repetitiveness is very nice. The photo seems to be slightly overexposed in the back, but i like the composition. The bin in the lower left corner is somewhat distracting. I think an even larger aperture, and a smaller DOF could also have a very nice effect, as the woman in front is neither in focus, nor clearly out of focus. What do you think?

Thanks Hugo. I agree that the background needs some extra exposure, I have just chickened out from the masking for the time being. The bin is something that I had not noticed when I composed the photo, most probably because my viewfinder does not have a coverage of 100%, which is sometimes rather frustrating. As for the DOF, at the time of shooting I would have preferred a much smaller aperture, at least f/8 or f/11, but what you suggest could be interesting as well.

Hello Matej!!! Thanks for your suggestions!I appreciate this. Well, I'm not a photographer, I just like to do this ( I mean find sth special). I've just noticed sth. Isn't it the same aisle but from the other side?? By the way Bratislava is BEAUTIFUL!! But unfortunately I can mostly remember the most expensive parking in Europe (I've paid over 800 K per 4 hours...) :)

to tell you the truth,I find annoying the white nose of the woman in front. But I like the woman in the background very much,and I believe she could make a great photo by herself -after some angle and perspective experimentation.The only mystery I feel in this scene is created by her alone. Without her the photo would be a dull snapshot,in my opinion. By the way,if I was there I wouldn't think of choosing the winebar sign as my focusing target.

Yes, the white reflection on the nose doesn't look very good. I have just checked the print, and fortunately it's not so bright there.

Hello Matej. I especially like this photo. You have acheived three important things very well - the timing is perfect, exposure is good and the composition is really excellent! On the computer screen I think the first person with soft focus is OK. Perhaps could increase the contrast (just 1 grade) - but that is just my personal preference. If the white sky in the top was cropped the image might be a little stronger (also for me). Altogether excellent image. congratulations ... John.

John, thanks for your comment. The level of sharpness on the print (8x12") is also acceptable, I think. Upon close inspection, the woman is obviously soft (movement + shallow DOF), but when viewed at an arm's length, it's not very noticable.
I find your suggestion to increase contrast quite interesting. It might indeed help make the darker features of the sunlit building stand out better. The alley would go darker, but a bit of dodging (at least on the woman's face and jacket) should solve that. You've certainly given me something to think about and experiment with.
