Darrin James   {K:3944} 11/19/2003
Thanks Kathleen. The NeatImage process really is there to take the roughness gained from the scanning process. From the trannie I have blown up this shot to a 16X12 and it hangs in my lounge room and the digital posted image looks pretty much the same. As close as I could get it anyway. The only part I can't explain is the small section on the RHS. Cheers, Darrin

kathleen fonseca   {K:11992} 11/18/2003
well, see Darrin, this the point..perhaps we differ in what we feel is manipulation. NeatImage cleans up noise artitfacts. It also softens, a lot or a little, depending on the results of the imaging profile and/or your own choice of settings. In this case, you have used NeatImage to strip your photo of practically every and any real texture and created a glowly plasticized version of the scene. So it isn't out of camera and this didn't really exist as it's portrayed. And that's fine! You like it, the viewers like it, the Editor loves it. It's a matter of taste, it's a matter of one's personal philosophy regarding photography and it sedates the masses with its surreal lush light and picturesque narrative quality. It actually reminds me of a Cambodian Huck Finn/Tom Sawyer ;)) and that's a good thing!

But to me, it's manipulated and i am grateful for your disclosure...for we see this and we think, wow, i have a shot that has similar qualities, i like this lush imagery, i'll look into NeatImage. We learn from YOU. But if you and others like you say nothing of your technique then all we do is stroke your ego and i'm not here for that. i want to learn and to the extent i can, i want to help. Thanks for your comment regarding your method. It was very helpful. And congratulations, once again, on Editor's Choice. Best regards: kat~

Stephen Gaudin   {K:64} 11/18/2003
This is awesome. The composition and lighting is reminicent of one of the old Master's oil paintings. I think that I can see how parts of Michaelangelo's cistine chappel could have been inspired by an image such as this.

As excellent composed and wonderful lighted as the first time I've seen this image of you Darrin. Great shot. How and what are you doing at the moment....Best regards Harry

Darrin James   {K:3944} 11/18/2003
This shot has had the following processes added to it.
1. Scanned from trannie
2. Cleaned up to look like the original
3. Run through NeatImage to smoothen it out
4. Posted
NO effects have been put on it from PS.

Alan Orr   {K:9671} 11/18/2003
I rated this photo highly, it is a very pleasant image. However much like Kathleen above, there is little doubt in my mind that this image has an effect filter applied to it, and more. Im sorry to say this, but it is my opinion. Be that as it may, it is a nice image, and yes, very very much like a painting.

Artie Colantuono   {K:12275} 8/28/2003
This is what timing is all about. The decisive moment, and as Cartier Bresson once said being in the right place at the right time...The lighting is really excellent here as well as your use of the frame...all come together to make an excellent well concieved & well executed image....The columned light is striking as well as the body positions of the two men one of whom appears to be smoking...
Kathleen just for your information and I'm not picking on you just informing if I may; the men are indeed lite by the column of light but the light is striking them from the front right not over head or from the rear, notice the light on the handlebars and on the chrome of the wheels of the bike, also the lighting around the hat and the shadows of the men and bike to there left and slightly rear in the grass...see the shadows of the man on the right just to his left rear....these signs are all indicative of the directional light....I to live and work in the tropics and we fortunately get this light every morning or almost....I see no manupulation done to this image at all except for the scanning process and conversion to RGB jpg format....

kathleen fonseca   {K:11992} 8/27/2003
sorry, i?m not buying that this isn?t manipulated. Manipulation needn?t be the issue if the image is pleasing enough but since you are claiming this image is right out of the camera i will say i sincerely doubt it. The quality of the processed image is very low with JPG artifacts everywhere, particularly around edges. This would result from excessive manipulation especially using the PS 'sharpen edges' feature. The two boys are standing in a pool of light yet neither of them has a lick of light on them. i am hardly an expert in photography or photoshop but i have never ever seen a photograph come out of a camera like this not even in the tropics where i shoot exclusively. regards: kat-

Gorgeous shot!! Amazing lighting and the softness created by the haze and mists really adds to the mood. One of the cool things about the Editor's Choice feature is that it often points me to portfolios I've never visited. I had a wonderful time going through yours -- I share your wanderlust! You've been to some amazing places and have taken some beautiful shots. Thanks for sharing little pieces of your adventures!!

  0

Luke Luther   {K:14693} 8/27/2003
It is deserving of the praise that it receives. The lighting is certainly golden; the composition is superb with the path leading right through the middle of the image and the interesting main subject captured in a moment of tranquility and rest.

The overall appeal is very whimsical. I like the effect the lighting has on the scene. However, it looks like the photo has been altered to appear as though it is half painting/photo.

  0

Dawn Earles   {K:182} 8/11/2003
Amazing. There are no words that I can speak that will do this photo justice. But I can try. I know most people think this looks like a painting - and it does. Because of it's striking beauty. We buy paintings like this because we never actually see places like this. This kind of beauty can't exist in the world unless it's through the eyes of a painter. Right? Well, obviously not. This is a photograph - this is a real place. Either you have found the most beautiful place in the world, or you are one extreemly talented individual who posseses many photoshop skills. but since you said this is not manipulated, I will assume that you have a very talented eye because I have never seen such a simple place look so beautiful. An image like this brings you beyond the place of an ordinary photographer. You are and artist. Thank you for sharing.

i remember seeing this photo of yours darrin. i thought i wrote a comment on it.. but anyway, what you have here is a chance, meaning the lighting from the sun was temporary, and you happened to be there at the right spot at the right time. This shot looks like a golden painting.. what is interesting is the accurate DOF choice you have used.. well done..

Spectacular light and composition. Excellent. No criticism here at all, but the little extra bonus would have been silhouettes that tell a more fascinating story. Still a 10. Just a thought to consider maybe... Congrats.

To answer the questions. This is in the perimiters of Preah Khan, one of the temples of Ankor. The wall that you see is the perimeter wall and the door (entrance) is exactly that, a way out of the temple boundary. Thank you for your comments.

Dawna G.    {K:7709} 11/29/2002
it's all about the light! and perfect light here, love that you exposed to silhouette the figures - exceptional!

Can you tell us a little more about the bg- I see a path and what looks like a door?

  0

Kim Culbert   {K:37070} 11/29/2002
The light is so amazing in the image... looks like an old oil painting, and the lines and perspective play with my mind in weird ways. Is there a wall around the forest? At the end of the path there is a doorway which looks like an exit from the forest... very strange to see!
Thank you for sharing~!

Well composed, with the path leading to the gate, and a great capture of incredible light.
