This has a really nice mood to it Steve. The colors are soft, the image delivers peace and tranquility. What is the white stuff?? No complaints here! (9

this tree seems to be reaching out to the new day....so very well seen and captured Steven

Marc Gougenheim   {K:5398} 12/2/2002
Nice shot and good details as well. I am just wondering whether the composition could and should be a bit more dynamic... I'm unsure, whether that would be a good thing actually, but I guess it all boils down to where each of us sets the limit between quietness and boredom. To me, it works fine, though... Just not to the point of an absolute Wow!! for which I would expect something really outstanding... That's about it. I rated the picture an 8, which still means I find it very good. Best regards.

Magically Delicious!

Love this and would think it would look amazing printed!

Bart Aldrich   {K:7614} 12/2/2002
The colors and patterns of the trees are wonderful.

Cemal Ekin   {K:2309} 12/2/2002
I would like this photograph more if it did not show what appears to be USM artifacts around the tree trunk and branches. The composition works for me. I like the main tree in the foreground. Its branches form a prayer-like stance where all the others are typical round or oval shaped trees. It certainly has an interesting touble trunk which I like. The distance conveyed in the photograph is quite emphatic. I am not so sure about the color, apparently it was natural but for some reason it gives a more artificial, added-on look for me. I would be curious to see it in B&W, perhaps with a very subtle toning akin to selenium toning of the wet prints.

This photo shows me yet again the virtues of simplicity in composition. As Bart noted, the details of the tree are magnificent. I also find the colors and tones are magnificent. Truly outstanding.

I especially like the two background trees, it really make the viewer's eye move in and out.

The background looks abit oversharpend.

Love pictures of trees in the first place. However this picture is more than just at tree... it conjures up a beautiful mood of silence and peacefullness.

Thanks for the comments everyone. Cemal, I readily acknowledge the overuse of USM. This main subject was very soft (slightly out of focus) to begin with as it was difficult to focus with my viewfinder fogged-up throughout that cold, damp morning. My attempts to sharpen it in PS do look a bit overdone here in certain parts of the image. PS can be a dangerous tool in the hands of a novice. Regarding the color, although unique, it is natural and was what attracted me to this scene. Marc, although there were undoubtedly different and perhaps better or more dynamic compositional opportunities, I was determined to keep the background trees in this shot for added perspective. I'll have to go back soon and confirm this, but I deon't believe I had many options if the background trees were to stay. Thanks for taking the time to observe and comment.

P.S. to Vince T...........it's called snow, you sundrenched Hawaiian rat, you. ; )

this inspires me to get out in the early morning wisconsin winters and start snappin some photos. the tone of this is excellent, and if i were in this position, i would of experimented with some under and over exposures. an under exposure would deepen all of these colors, given they are dark. that might give an interesting feel to it.

one more comment...if this is a place you visit frequently...then i have an idea. as i kept on looking at this photo...i could not help to think of how amazing it would be with this same tonal value, to have maybe a deer at the foot of the tree...would be a difficult photo to accomplish...but truly an amazing one.

Wonderful Pic Steven!very well done, great idea of composing those other trees there too. this makes the viewer looking at the all image from foreground to background, making more than one interesting point to see.Tones/contrast very beautiful too. ;)

Simple is often the most beautiful. I like this type of image.

Gian Grosso   {K:104} 5/17/2003
excellent. poetry.

Audrey Reid   {K:5872} 7/8/2003
Simplicity at its very best Steven.

David Yates   {K:4698} 11/20/2003
Great eye and composition- almost Ansel like. I agree with comments about color artifacts-I might try desaturating the color, particularly in the snow on the foreground tree. Again I'd suggest Neat Image to remove the noise in the open areas. There are also some good techniques for remove edge artifacts by using cloning brush in luminance mode at less than full opacity.
None of these quibbling points detracts from the fact that this is a really fantastic image, and worthy of a little additional work to make perfect.
Regards,
David

It's a wonderful image, maybe too much sharp!!!

Tim Long   {K:9225} 2/20/2004
