About I think the b/w tones highlight the steam to create a special feel, should I crop off the left buildings or is this a non factor, opinions welcome.

I'd crop the left buildings but that's just my opinion. I think I'd like it with just the steam on that side. Good image Jake! BRRRRRR!

Are the buildings a nonfactor? Well, I tried covering that part of the image, and what I saw was a very different photograph. Somehow, the presence or absence of the buildings changes the entire scale of the image. In addition, the buildings put the scene into rather prosaic context, as opposed to a certain sense of mystery when there's only the steam.
